  2. No comments at all guys???..hhhmmm....

As I am newbie in U/W photography... I would like to know how to improve these shots....

  3. Hey Spaz

You are going in the right direction here, a nice blue, especially on #2

Do you notice the big diff in the photos? That would be the ball itself. ON the second shot you are doing exactly what you need to do to get pleasing rays in the shot, ie avoiding the ball and just letting the rays into the composition. This is what you will need to do when shooting other scenes as well. That way you will avoid the big blob that you have in the first photo. Although it is not too bad, no cyan ring that i would get with my D70.

I still think you would benefit from a higher shutter on the second shot too, to give a darker blue.

What set up are you using?

  4. I think the lack of cyan fringing is due to the proximity of the camera to the surface.

Are these shot in a pool? If they are maybe try getting a few props to shoot with to practice strobe technique and composition.

A willing niece/nephew/son/daughter is usually perfect for that.

    Hi Mike,

Thanks for the comments.. I would like to know how to improve on it as I have seen pictures or shots taken of sun (ball) itself...and it is nicely exposed... I do notice the big difference in the both the photo..thus the reason I posted it... For the fist photo I was trying to get the sunburst directly under the surface...but I would think it would look better in B&W mode? Maybe I should edit it..:P

What is a Cyan ring anyway??..any example of a Cyan ring? FYI, I am using a SP-350 with single S&S YS-110 strobe. I understand that there is a limitation to my setup..but I think it is good enough for a beginner like myself. And which is the shutter speed?? I shot it at 1/2000 and F8 (wrongly shot at ISO 200).

    Hi Scuba_SI,

Thanks for the comments. My question is what is cyan fringing?..Any example of it? How do I get the effect in the shot?

It was shot in the pool...and was just holding my breath UW..as I didn't bring scuba gears..:P..

Props were not my main purpose of shooting at the pool yet..maybe later..;)

No such luck with a volunter so far..as I have yet to have a willing niece/nephew/son/daughter..etc..

  6. here is a thread on sunballs and cyan fringing : Click Here

Reading that thread should get you upto speed on cyan fringing and shooting digital sunbursts.

    Here is a cyan ring:

    SBuxtonFP1630.jpg

    shot at about 120'

On digital at depth you often get a cyan blob around the sun, and this is something that is not aesthetically pleasing to a lot of people. To avoid it you can use something to obscure the sun, of compose the shot with the sun just out of the frame so you still get the rays.

Try dropping your ISo to the minimum and shooting again, take a series of shots at different shutter speeds and see what you get, also try going a little deeper. but not beyond your limits as a skin diver :P:P:lol:

Thanks for the heads-up on the topic of Cyan fringing....I understand what you mean now..;) I would guess that it is rather shallow then when I was taking the shot...around 2m only..:(..

I'm only learning to do skin-diving at the pool so far..am planning to do more of it on dive trips at house reefs..:(.

I will try and shoot more and post it up here for comments to learn.....thanks a lot guys...:)
