  1. Hi

I need some help deciding if and what I should add to my dslr setup.

I'm going to Turks and Caicos in a couple months and plan to spend most of my dives trying to teach myself how to get the best underwater shots.

Right now my setup is a canon 60mm macro lens and 1 ds-125 flash.

Would I be better off getting a Wide angle setup and working with that too? Would adding a second flash be worth it? Or is what I have already enough to keep me busy?

Any other advice for me going into this diving environment(T&C) ?

  2. Why not both options?

At the end you'll have them both anyway B)

But seriously it's depend on what your interest and what you like more.

Just remember that if you go with the WA option you'll probably need the second strobe at some point, especially if you use the fish-eye lens, one strobe is just not enough.

The WA option I was looking at was a Sigma 10-20 f/4-5.6 lens and an 8'' dome. Right now, my budget can only allow for WA or a second flash.

  4. i started with a 60mm 2.8d with my d70 +1 strobe, ike housing.

looking back, i would have started with a sigma 15mm FE instead.

but your on track, learn with that 60 and 1 strobe first.

  5. A DS-125 will cover the Nikon 16mm FE or Sigma 15 mm FE, but will not cover the Nikon 10.5 adequately. As my posts on Wetpixel attest, I think the 16mm FE (pretty similar to the Sigma 15) is a stomping great lens. I think either of the longer FE lenses would be a good "intro" to WA lens to use. I haven't used the 10-20 UW yet (but like it on land), but suspect 1 strobe wouldn't cover it below 12-14 mm -- just guessing.

    All the best,

    Chris in Red Stick.

My experience is that you should start with the macro lens and work your way up to the WA. The macro is much more reliable. Very quickly you will have a few keepers from every dive. The WA is MUCH harder, but is very gratifying since you can capture the feeling of being underwater. I would invest in the second strobe before stocking up on lenses and ports. Beside the 60mm will also do nice fish portraits.

  7. Thanks for the advice!

If I get something additional, I think I'm going to go with another flash. Just wish they had an ikelite strobe package discounted price that included a dual sync cord. I'm going to spend some time in a pool testing out flash positions, and maybe try a homemade reflector to help fill light subjects for super close-macro. If I don't like what I'm getting, I'll have to pony up for the second flash.

  8. HI,

you can also try strobe positions without getting wet, I often startout by

setting up my rig & going round the house & shooting allsorts of things,

also gives the misses a laugh, just dont ware your scuba kit :)
