The pro-whaling nations, led by Japan issued a statement calling for the end of the commercial whaling ban moratorium issued in 1986 by the IWC. Claiming the commission is not up to date with the "scientific" facts, the anti-whaling bias of the IWC needs to be reformed and have threatened repeatedly to quit the organization if they are not allowed to whale at a "sustainable level."
Very sad. So basically they are saying, if you don't formally approve our killing the whales, we will quit and do it anyway. Since the IWC really has no enforcement capabilities, how does one respond to that? With the decline of other large marine species, i have been predicting for years that the whales would be targeted again. Seems to be happening right on schedule...just in time to recommision those bluefin tuna and shark finning boats to "harvest" whales.
Does there exist an example of an effective organization that is effectively managing a globally migrating (pelagic) marine stock?
