It depends on the airport really. At the HK airport, they tend to be stricter about bulky items as carry-on at the gate entrance. It also depends on who is at the gate. I had a problem getting my portercase to fit the sizewise box and was denied entry into the area by one guard. I walked over to another gate and she didn't even look in my direction.
I often carry my housing out in plain sight so I look more professional. They don't usually harass me.
Lesson of the day... don't stop over at Cheung Lok Airport if you have 60lbs of hand luggage. If you really want a tip... don't go to Wakatobi.

Because of luggage issues?

Sarcasm Cor... tough in cheek rag on Wackytoby.Mboag, I've found Singapore Airlines to be pretty lax on cabin luggage from LAX...it's just the check-in process for Tom Bradley Terminal 4 that changes ever so often. I travelled 14 times last year and they changed the check-in process afew times round. It's the only airport I've been to that expects the passenger to adjust to their whimsical security policies.

Cathay have been a bit pedantic about the 32 KG max bag limit at HK airport but have FORTUNATELY never checked my roll on ( 2 housings / bodies / asstd lenses ) or my backpack ( laptop , chargers , extra drives etc ).
They had little interest in Cairns or Taipai or Osaka just Hong Kong
I find their seats not very comfortable any way - seem to built for a body type other than mine.
I try to fly with Qantas where I can cos we get a great weight allowance by the time seat allowance and FF teir allowance is added into the equation 2 x 30KG CHECKED no problems , all with a smile and an " is there anything else we can do for you sir "
