  1. Through well informed resources, I heard that Nikon will announce a new DSLR today.

    More to come later today.......

Edit: Now it is Thursday :)

  2. Personally, I think that Nikon have announced enough new DLSRs recently! I wish they'd spend some time on lenses! But given there current form it would not surprise me.

  3. I heard from a friend whose ex-girlfriend used to cut the hair of Nikon Tech who overheard a conversation by certain unidentified Nikon employees........

Nikon will eventually announce new products.

Heard the same thing about Canon.

    :):)

There was a time I would have loved a D2H replacement, something remotely on par with the 1D, but I think I'm over it. Since I toasted my D2X, I've downgraded to the D200. It's pretty much my digital F100, which is all I ever really wanted. While 6mp was OK, 10 and 12mp allowed some margin for error. I don't need any more. I think we are in the evolutionary phase of product development and I think I'll wait for several more evolutionary cycles before I am interested in newer models.

    Ouch, what happened?

  5. Ouch, what happened?

    Which time? :)

    1) First time. I was stupid. I pinched the main o-ring. It was a little harder to close, but I managed to do it. Duh! My Aquatica main o-ring was stuck in the groove. Removing it was a destructive process. It never came out. The Subal didn't either. Well, at least until it did. It came out much, much easier.

The unit got dunked in the rinse tank before going on the zodiac. Alarm went off. Still damaged camera to the tune of $1200 and in wouldn't work for the rest of the trip even though it looked fine. Friggin' electronics.

    2) Second time. I was stupid. Wakatobi, rig was carried to the boat. As I was getting ready for the dive, I noticed the dome port was turned a little. I turned it closed. I did not carefully inspect. The dome port was not secured properly to the extension. Major flood. Exceeded the allowable ascent rate. Death to everything but the CF card.

  6. " Exceeded the allowable ascent rate."

Ouch! No camera (even a D2X) is worth that!

u have me checking the press page every hour.

Don't bother, I just heard a couple of minutes ago that the anouncement is postponed to thursday... :)

I use a high tech port lock to help prevent this problem. It consists of wrapping the port and extension rings with duct tape. It looks stupid, but works. It is a cheap insurance.

I have saved a fortune on duct tape by changing from a Subal to a Sea&Sea housing with a port lock built-in. Some day all housings will be built that way!

  10. But John, do you never want to change ports without having to undo the entire housing? Its one of those awkward questions - should I or shouldn't I have a port lock on, or use it, or worry or become more neurotic, etc.. On balance I reckon that if I had a port lock (I don't but I have used housings with them in the past) I would't use it (I didn't).

Back to the rumour mill - how many people seriuosly think that a new camera will improve their photography, whatever is announced will almost certainly feature incremental improvements - I still think that software has the potential to have a far more drastic effect on currently generated images - especially with regard to utilising the full bit depth that existing cameras provide.

  11. The only area where I think better camera technology will be helpful is better dynamic range on the high end as discussed on other threads. It appears that this will be accomplished by having ' overlapping' sensors similar to the Fuji. 10+ megapixels seems to be all I need for large prints. So when the 10+ megapixel camera with extended dynamic range is available I think I will upgrade. Beyond that it's unlikely that my eye will notice any difference with improved technology. Kind of like a high end stereo, my ear cannot tell which is better beyond a certain point.

  12. They just announced the new Coolpix line. See dpreview.com

    No DSLR announcement there though.

I do think technology has reached a point of diminishing retun for most shooters. Getting a new camera for me, however, does help me take better pictures! When I get a new toy I generally make more of an effort to get out and take more pictures both learning how to use it and wanting to see what it can do! More pictures = better photographer at least for me.

Now one of my rich fantasy relatives needs to leave me a bundle for a new Hassy H3 system with a housing and I'll be an awesome photographer!!

  14. Pre-PMA 2007: Canon has today announced the latest generation of their EOS-1D series. The Mark III has a ten megapixel APS-H (1.3x FOV crop) CMOS sensor and can shoot at ten frames per second. It features the updated DIGIC III image processor, a new 19 area Auto Focus system, up to ISO 6400 and a 3.0" LCD monitor (with a live view feature). The Mark III should ship in April for US$ 3999. As has become 'the norm' with Canon we had no information on this product before announcement, so no preview or analysis. I'm sure many were expecting an EOS 30D update, well not yet.

This looks like a very nice camera.
