Can the flash be opened in Ikelite SLR housings?

  1. Can the Rebel XT flash be opened inside an Ikelite housing? I'm planning to buy a housing, provided that I can use my old Epoque strobe with fiberoptic sync... Can't afford to buy an Ikelite strobe too in the first run.

  2. There is not enough room in the housing for the flash to pop all the way up but there is enough room for it to open part way up. The flash in this position put out enough light to fire an ikelite stobe on a slave controler so it should work fine with a fibre optic.

I am unfamiliar with Epoque strobes. I do not know if they are compatible with the XT's preflash.

  3. Ok thanks, then it should work, I'll give it a try! /Erik

    Hi Erik,

did you already have a chance to put your Rebel into an Ikelite housing?

I'm thinking of a very simmilar setup: Canon Rebel XTi with Inon D2000 strobe in Ikelite housing.

Otherwise the transition from P&S to SLR would be too painfull - moneywise.

  5. Unfortunately no - I have bought the housing, but it's presently in the US with a friend who's bringing it to me i Sweden in 10 days. So in two weeks i'äll be able to give you a report. Same here, to expensive for me to buy a new strobe as well, the housing is already pushing the limits of what I can afford...

  6. Good news!

I tried my housing today with my Epoque stobe with fiberoptic sync. It works fine, also in my bathtub. I had to mount the "velcro sticker" for the optic cord on the port shade, to get it in position in front of the flash. Haven't tried it with my flat port yet but should work fine. According to Ikelite it was not possible...

Strange that noone else seems to have tried this, I guess most people buy a proper strobe right away.

Looking forward to trying it at Brothers Islands and Elphinstone in a few weeks.

  7. I tried this with my olympus e300 and Ike housing and it cant get high enough that the camera flash will work.

So the XT is just a lucky exception maybe.

Maybe. It only opens about 10 mm, but if I position the sync cord "cube" low it still gets enough light.
