Full lens Lengths?

5 posts
  1. Does anyone know where I can find the overall, extended length of popular lenses?

The Manfs don't tell the actual sizes once it's zoomed or focused out, and I'm trying to figure out whether these will fit in various ports.

I need them for Nikon, Canon and Oly, maybe some Sigma and Tamaron too.

I've looked on many reviews various charts, but only the smallest size is shown.

    TIA,

    Jack

  2. Hi Jack

I agree many of them don't and it is quite misleading. I was interested in Sigma macro lenses and fortunately checked with Sigma direct before buying a port extension. There is a huge extension on these in percentage terms and they did give me the dimensions when I emailed them. My advice would be in all cases to go to the manufacturer.

  3. Are you sure Jack, I think canon lists the maximum lengths in the specifications tab.

    e.g.:

Gerard, thanks, guess I've mostly been looking at the others; Nikon, Oly and Sigma.

It's really a PITA to figure out.

  4. Hi Jack,

I share your frustration in this respect and don't understand why this is not specified. It seems like an obvious piece of information but perhaps topside photographers don't care that much. The popular photography magazine has 1 or 2 lens tests in each issue and you can find most/all of them online. They do always give the min and max length for the lens and you will be able to find many of the lenses you are looking for there. Apart from that you have to waste a lot of time googling (and not being sure the information is reliable) or, probably better, go directly to the manufacturer. If enough people ask then perhaps they will post this spec in the future.
