D80 Kit lens 18-135

  1. I was just wondering if anyone has tried the 18-135 lens underwater, I was wanting some feed back to see if I need to invest the money in a dome port or not. I already have zoom clamp and +4 diopter for my Ikelite housing.

  2. hi larry,

i doubt many people have. i hear the 18-135 changes length quite a bit over the zoom range. this presents a problem with u/w dome ports. The port will have to be pushed so far out from the housing to fit the lens length at the 135mm end that when at 18mm, the port will be too far out to optically mesh with the lens.

i don't know for sure that the lens length changes too much, but i don't think superzooms are very applicable underwater in general.

Also, if you haven't already bought it, I would get the 18-200mm VR as an all purpose topside (not UW) lens over the 18-135mm non-vr any day for just a little more $$.

    Cheers,

    Chris

  3. I haven't tried it underwater yet. I just got it last week and will have to be out of the water for the next month or so.

I've used the 18-70 quite a bit and like it. I got the 18-135 hoping to get a little more reach without having to switch to a macro.

The Ikelite site recommends the new 8" dome system. It lists a footnote for the 6" system saying the port will cause the lens to vignette at 18-24mm.

I also have the 18-200VR and I wish they could build a dome for it. It's an awesome lens for a 10X zoom!
