info about ys-120 ttl slave

11 posts
  1. hi, i have a canon 350d with fantasea housing ,heinrich ttl converter and a ys-90auto connected to it.

i recently won a ys-120 strobe on e-bay and i'd like to use it as slave strobe in ttl mode

the problem is that i can't understand if this strobe has the ttl slave funcion or not... some site say yes, some other say no... some ys-120 owner can tell me if this funcion is present or not?

if the ttl slave funcion is not possible i'll try to use the strobe as normal slave and if i'm not satisfied i'll try to use a dual cord...

someone tried to use ys-90 and ys-120 connected with dual cord to the heinrich ttl converter?

    thx

    albe

  2. Here's what i got from Matthias Heinrich when i asked about the YS120 and D200:

    Hello Simon,

It depends on the serial number of the YS120 strobes, there are some

YS120 that are very fast and fast enough for the D200's double prepflash

but we still do not know the exact serial number range so we still list

    them as not compatible.

thx for response, if i understand it's not sure if the 120 is compatible with the converter, ok i'll verify when the strobe arrive..

for the other question? it support slave ttl ? this site list the various ys strobe and the 120 is marked as ttl-slave but some other site refute it...

  4. In old fashioned terms, it is a ttl slave. Newer Digital ttl with pre-flashes may confuse this, which is why it depends upon serial number as there must be a few versions of YS120's out there. Some which can handle preflash, some which can't.

    maybe i miss something...

if i know correctly the preflesh is used bye the compact camera while shooting ... anyway when i shot with my dslr the strobe emit only a single flash..

  6. Hi Albe,

I own a YS 120, so I can comment on it. The term TTL-Slave comes from ANALOG days, and it normally means: The main flash fires. The slave is triggered and fires also. The amount of light from both strobes is measured "Through The Lens". When enough light is on the film, the main flash is shut off, and a TTL-Slave can recognise this and shuts off as well, all this in such a short timing that it works.

The YS 120 definitely does NOT have this function!

The 120 can be triggered by the main flash, but as a result it can only fire with 1/2 or full power, no matter how much power the main strobe emited. (To complicate things: You can modify/weaken this when you use the diffusor that comes with the YS120, so you get two more settings). So it can be used as a slave, but not as a TTL-slave.

In digital it should be the same, but here it is much more complicated as you have no "live-recording" of the strobe power, but you have one or more pre-flashes instead. Anyhow, no slave-TTL.

    Greetings,

  7. When used with the Heinrich's converter, underwater strobes that can recycle very quickly will emit a series of preflashes, then a main flash.

If you're using a lightning quick flash like a Inon Z240 or Ikelite DS125 with a slave sensor, then the digital slave will emit the same preflashes and main flash. If it's too slow (YS120??), then it won't be able to keep up.

    Cheers

    James

  8. thx for replay ;)

i made some test in water and outside

i'm using the 120 as main flash, connected to the ttl converter and set in ttl mode, the y-90 is used as slave because it has more adjustable power...

for some time i'll shot with this configuration and if i'm not convinced by the result i'll buy a double ttl cord :)

anyway i found a strange thing, if i try to set the ys-90 as ttl/slave, and the 120 as main the shot is very very dark...

  9. Try taking a photo of a mirror to make sure both flashes are going off when they are supposed to.

  10. James,

you are right, but in this case you need a cable for the second strobe, and then it is no longer a slave.

yes, it will be a cabled strobe :)
