Shark Fin Frontier - Scuba Diving Magazine

  1. Hey folks,

This is not meant to be a "Members in Media" post, but rather an example of how we as serious shooters can make a difference to halt shark finning.

As you will recall, this past December Justin Ebert and I were out in the Misool region of Raja Ampat diving and filming with Andy Miners in the new marine protected area (MPA). Since the MPA is very new, there is and will be some lag in adherance by the fishermen. We are working hard to change that quickly.

The following is a printed account in the April issue of Scuba Diving Magazine of our encounter with a shark finning crew during our visit. It is graphic and moving and very real. Please share this with others so they might be motivated to take action as well.

  2. Good work Shawn.

However, I hope you will also will be able to publish this in "mainstream" media. I think perhaps most divers are aware of the problem, so you are to some extent preaching to the chior when this is published in a diving mag. Not wanting to take away the satisfaction of having this printed so nicely, I just want to encourage you to send this to editors elsewhere too.

  3. I completely agree. In the coming months you will see this in more mainstream publications. I am not at liberty to say which until they are on the news-stands. Unfortunately I have not yet found a UK/European publisher yet...but there is time.

All that being said, you would be surprised how many divers are ignorant of the shark situation. Remember, a large percentage of divers are vacation/resort divers who have seen few or no sharks in their lives. They must be educated as well.

  4. Excellent work Shawn, it has to start somewhere, and dive magazines are the appropriate place (for now)...
