  1. On my recent trip to Bonaire inspired by Dr Mustard I put a Teleconverter (Kenko 300 1.4x) on my Sigma 15mm Fisheye. Put it behind my Ikelite 8" dome with 5510.16 extension. As you can see in the first image the combination is very sharp corner-corner. The corners are actually better with the TC than without.

Please let me know what you think. (Good or Bad)

  2. Personally I don't think you can beat the 10.5 for wide, close focus. The more I use it the more I love it. Those results I could get with my 17-55MM (No offence) I also think when you post an example of something the subject needs to be interesting to good or it's just another image. Going back to the 10.5, it will focus right to the port, too close may be as you have to be careful you don't scratch it.

So when you try something new it has to be an awesome shot right off the bat with a subject that you have never shot before perhaps .. or very often at least?

Thats just stupid .. if I try something new I like to try it on subjects I know so that I know how they behave. This renders the problems to the new technique and not the new subject matter which I don't know how to photograph.

Anyways, William, It obviously worked for your first attempt. They seem in focus, was it hard to make them focus on the subject being so close ? And The teleconverter may give same results as a 10.5 but its probably also a lot cheaper correct? and the Nikkor lense doesn't instantly fit on the Canon 5D anyways Patrick which is full frame so gets more in anyways if you bothered to get the adaptor for it!

Did you enjoy this setup ? or was it limiting and tricky to use ?

Kriptap, this subforum is called Photo Gallery. Which means people can post photos for constructive critique and even for the heck of it. "Just another image" is what this sub forum is all about. They have as much right to post pics as you do for giving criticism. We wouldn't want to discourage people from posting now, would we?

  5. this is an interesting technique. I have ordered the 10-17 tokina and plan to try this on my trip to Little Cayman this May.

Whenever someone puts "No offence" in a post it generally indicates that you know you are being offensive. (No offence)

Going back to interesting subjects, I think we are all looking forward to seeing you post an award winning shot of a Two Headed Mermaid or an Albino Whale Shark with a Nose Ring.

  7. He asked for good or bad comments, there was on offence intended but those could have been taken with a lesser lens and not have gone through a teleconverter, the point I thought was, was it a good idea to use the 15MM with a teleconverter, I thought no, not in this case it did not show me anything different. After reading again what I said I do agree it did not read the way I meant it, I did not mean the image was no good, my apologies William.

  8. First of all, lets try to say on topic. No Kriptaps post was not all that constructive. But the appropriate response is to just ignore it. Condeming the poster just distracts further from the topic started by the OP.

Secondly, I asked for opinions not praise. I'd much prefer constructive criticism to "ohh great shot" You lean though criticism. And learning is the reason why we are all here. So please, if you have any thoughts don't hold back. Just try to keep it constructive.

Kriptap, the Nikon 10.5 focuses to 14cm, the Sigma 15 focuses to 15cm. So yes, the 10.5 does focus closer, however I am skeptical that this difference is significant in any real situation.

In the first image, the dome was as close to the reef as I was confortable geting without scratching the dome. And in the second image, the snail really was touching the dome. So at least with the dome I was using, it would not matter if the lense could focus to 1mm, you would not gain anything.

There may be differences in sharpness, color, chromatic abberations, vignetting, or flare, but close focusing ability is identical for all pratical purposes.
