D200 housings

  1. Well I took the plunge and bought a D200. Currently use a D70 & Ike housing with dual SB-105 strobes. Lens are 60mm, 105vr, 12-24mm all Nikon. 3 different ports from Ike.

After going to Beneath the Sea couple of weeks ago looked at a couple of housings for the D200.

I really liked the Aquatica, looked and felt great, I can get a discount through my instructors so I am seriously leaning this way, they also said to use my Sb-105s to they burn up or I can go for inon Z240's which they recomended. Does anybody use this camera and housing set-up? And how do you like it?

Also, looked at Subal very sweet but also very pricey compared to Aquatica. Is it really worth that much more?

Living in NJ, I really only use this U/W set-up for travel about 3-4 weeks a year so that takes in effect.

I would rather spend the extra money on another trip or another D200 as a back-up.

Have booked Bonaire for end of May, probably will still use the D70 & Ike for that trip. Also have booked Lembeh for 2 weeks in Sept. hoping to have the D200 housed by then and can hand the D70 to my dive buddy and girlfriend

    Thanks for any thoughts!

  2. I don't think you can go wrong with Aquatica. I own an Aquatica D200 and I can say without reservation that it is the finest housing I have owned. Very compact size, handles well underwater, and everything fits perfectly. The new mounting block system makes assembling the housing a snap.

I also use a pair of SB105's and those will be fine. No need to upgrade until someone comes out with a dedicated i-ttl strobe.

  3. I also wholeheartedly recommend the Aquatica 200. I originally purchased it as a safe-second for my D2x while overseas but have found its compact size and durability well worth its "reasonable" price and often use it on beach dives rather than larger rigs. I also now have the user-removeable Aqua View Finder which makes framing even tiny subjects at night a pleasure. It's pretty damn pricey at 1100 and change -- but a work of art.

I have used Aquatica housings for close to 20 years (since the F3) and they have never disappointed . . .

  4. I also have an Aquatica housing for my d200 with dual inon z240 strobes and ttl converter. I have added the magnifier viewfinder but have not as yet used it. I have one of the earliest housings, it was the only one available for the D200 at the time. The system is easy to load the camera and maintain.

They housing and system work fine, but could be a little more ergonomically friendly. While you have a lot of buttons an knobs to access the controlls, they are sometimes awkward to utilize underwater. I am not sure if that is the case with Subal, sea and sea or seacam. It would have been nice to try one of these before I bought mine. It also suffers from about 2.5 pounds +/- negative, this can be helped with foam floation. The entire rig with my laptop weighs in at aboub 44 pounds. It does pack (tightly without the viewfinder) in a lowepro computreker plus backpack. In short I am happy with my aquatica system and recommend it. You have an option that I did not have, the ability to see, touch and try other housings. I would take advantage of that before making my decision if I were you.

  5. I looked at Aquatica, Nexus and Subal before buying. I went with the Subal because of ergonomics, and you can just feel the difference in the engineering in my opinion. I also like the latch system, very quick and simple.

    Nothing wrong with Aquatica though.

  6. I have an Aquatica and love it, I can't fault it. It gets a solid workout and have never had a problem with it.

  7. I was also using a D70 & Ike housing, a Subal with F100 before that and started trying the D200. I looked at the Ike, Hugyfot, S&S, and Aquatica but finely went with the Nexus. The Subal and F100 was superb but I couldn't afford it for the D200 so didn't even try it. I use zoom lenses and the dealer warned me the Hugyfot sometimes had problems with these and it was expensive. I didn't quite like the feel of the Aquatica, spacing was just a little too large for my hands. Ended up going for the Nexus which just recently arrived. My initial reaction is that it is going to be great. But all the housings looked like they would do the job, just little individual things which might make a difference to someone.
