D70 BGLOD?

7 posts
  1. Well it had to happen. :D

I think my D70 finally succummed to the BGLOD. This weekend while taking easter shots of the kids the D70 just locked up. Turning on or off wouldn't do anything. It stayed on regardless of ON/OFF position but wouldn't respond. Then I noticed the blinking green light.

Removing the battery seem to clear it for a few shots then the same thing.

I tried a new battery and it seemed to be OK.

Then today it locked up. Twice changing the battery cleared it and now it seems OK again.

Is this how it starts? I pictured this issue being total lockup.

If this is "IT" I want to send it in right away. I have a Baja trip at the end of May. But right now it seems the camera is working. :glare:

  2. Yep: My D70 showed intermittent behaviour for about a week before going into fullblown BGLOD. I'd get it sent off ASAP. On the upside, the torrent of cameras needing repair should be slowing down to a trickle by now, so perhaps they will turn it around quickly.

Sorry to be the bearer of bad news. :D

  4. Don't worry about it. Get the D70.

Some early D70s had an issue that causes them to die early--just lock up. Nikon is fixing all of them for free. Lots of people online have had theirs fixed. There is even a simple form to fill out. All you need are the serial #, name and return address. No explanation required. I printed the form and it goes off for service tomorrow.

I picked mine up the first day they were released. The later models should be OK. I'll update when I get it back.

  5. will they fix it if you are not the original owner?

    Thanks

  6. I got my D70 back from Nikon yesterday. Yay! They fixed it for free and turned it around quickly. I mailed it in on April 19th and I got it back on May 2. It was free. There should be no issue for 2nd owners. All I did was print the quick form I found on the website--same as the one Eric posted.

They fixed the BGLOD. It works great now. They might have cleaned it externally. Sadly they didn't clean the sticky mode dial as I had hoped. I spilled a bit of lemonade once on it and its stiff to turn. Fortunately I leave it in manual in my housing. It would be impossible to work from the housing.

Anyway props to Nikon for a speedy service.
