Ikelite housing and D70s

  1. Hi All,

Anyone using an Ike houseing with a D70s. The question is can I use my SB105 on manual or do I need to send the housing in to Ike to have them change the connection

    Thanks

    Joe

  2. You can connect your SB105 with a #4116.31 sync cord and use the strobe in manual mode. No modification to the housing is required.

  3. Hi,

I'm using dual SB 105's with my Ike housing and D70. Its an older non TTL, but what the heck I never really shot TTL even when I shot film. I'm very pleased with the results and don't plan on changing the strobes at any time in the near future.

Have a great day and enjoy life

Thanks ! just bought an IKE housing on ebay and looking for used D70 or D70s. Any issues with the smaller screen on the D70

    Thanks

  5. No. Wider is always better of course. But the D70 is sufficient.

The D70 was revolutionary at the time in 2004. Three years later there are better cameras out there. But the D70 gets the job done. You are framing through the viewfinder so all the critical info the LCD shows are done in the viewfinder (critical focus, framing etc) I really just use the viewfinder for confirmation and for a check of the lighting since I'm on manual. I use the histogram to be more precise. Lighting too has some latitude if you shoot raw.

The main difference between the D70 and later models is the 3 color histogram. The D70 is only RGB. It would be nice to check color balance underwater.

But remember, any new camera you get today will be obsolete in a few years. The D70 still has all the basic features and performance of the midrange. By virtue of digital capture though it is SLRs is still worlds beyond any of the coveted film cameras.

    Good Luck!

Don't worry too much with this issue. I use this camera for two year and didn't loosed one frame because of that. I don't say I wouldn't prefer a bigger one but if I can uses it with my @%^#* eyes, (almost) anyone can.

My consern is also with my @#@$$## eyes and denial that I need a presription mask

What sync cord are you using?

Thanks Jean .What about the substrobe 200 ?

  8. The dual cord from Ike's housing to two SB-105 is #4116.32

Regarding the viewfinder and prescription mask, I had it (prescription mask) for long time before starting using DSLR and almost didn't used it since I didn't noticed big difference, in the moment I moved from P&S to DSLR I needed to use it because of the viewfinder, no mater what viewfinder btw, also with the much bigger one of the D200 I still need it.

Do you use a bi focal mask?

What about to an old Ikelite substrobe 200 ?

    Thanks

    Hi,

I've not had any issues with the smaller screen, but the only time I'm really staring at it is during my saftey stop and getting rid of my bad shots ( which can be quite a bit )

As for the age of the D70/D70s, it still takes much better picuters than I'm able to do. So until my talent out grows the camera I'm resisting upgrading. I'm putting my money into better glass. I just picked up a Tokina 10-17 and Tokina 12-24.

The substrobe 200 will still work with no problems.

I do look at them, but basically just a quick look. I'm still getting used to the gage reader lenses in my maks so it does make a big difference on how I review things now.

I've only had a chance to play once with the 10-17 in some local water. I like what I've seen so far. I'm hoping to try the 12-24 in two weeks, but I'm also temped to try my sigma 15 with the green water magic filters. I've been shooting the 15 for about a year now and really do like the lens. I'm more of a prime lens guy than a zoom.

Do make the investment in the Ike 8" dome. Its well worth the money.

any images I could see with the 15mm ? Also Thinking I could use the modeling light on the 200 as a focusing light ?

  14. If you go to http://stnichols.proimageguide.com look in the gallery section under Channel Islands, all the underwater shots were done with the sigma 15.

I was using the 6" ike dome at the time and I could focus within 6" of the dome if I remember correctly. I really haven't had the chance to put the 8" dome thru its paces yet.

The tropical shots where done back in my film days with the Nikonos 15mm lens.

    Glad you like the shots

How do you comare the 15mm nikonos and the 16 mm ?

    Thanks

  18. Hi,

The Nikonos 15mm lens is very hard to beat IMHO. But the Sigma 15 can do somethings that it can't. Over/undershots could not be done with the Nikonos. And the sigma will auto focus so your critical focus point is more spot on (or one would hope so)

The best thing is to shoot a lens and learn it. Then you can get the most out of it
