Nikkor 50mm 1.8D underwater

  1. Why? I flooded my macro lens and I was left with 10.5 only. I wanted to shoot some smaller stuff too, I tried this combination: Nikkor 50mm 1.8D with +4 diopter behind ikelite 6" tiny fish eye port.

Here are some samples: 50mm 1.8D - test

Unfortunately I only tried that on one night dive with strong current, so I did not manage to test how close it could actually focus. I liked the sharpness of this combination. Not great photos but they prove it works ;)

Anyway I will give it some more testing. I'm thinking about using it in a minimalistic travel kit:

    1) Ikelite with 6" FE port - the port is tiny and the whole housing with port on it fits in my Lowepro backpack.

    2) 10.5mm, 16mm and 50mm - all go behind the same port

    3) 50mm is not a true macro but seems ok for anemone fish etc.

    What do you think?

  2. It's looks like a good alternative but I think I'll continue to prefers the 60 micro in regular situations, its very close in size and its a real 1:1 macro, of course you need the extra port but its worth it.

  3. Why not a flat port? You'd get better magnification...

I'm interested in seeing more shots. Almost everyone has one of these in their camera bag as it's only $100,. I think it's true value may be for available light shots using it's faster speed.

Please post more shots when you get them. I might try a dive with mine with a diopter on it. But as Arnon has stated the 60mm macro is a much better idea UW overall, almost all the shots you posted would of been better closer up.

  4. It seems to work well. These shots are good.

This would be a good way to get a measure of macro on the cheap--esp for fish portraits. To take this up a notch you could try it with a flat port and a 3/4T diopter. That would allow you to get closer, get the added magnification we are used to with a flat port, and improve the sharpness a bit.

Good idea and thanks for posting. The 50mm at $90 is a smoking deal!
