Crown of Thorns in Hawaii

  1. I've never seen one in Hawaii before so I'm not even sure this is a COT; however I was told by someone during a meeting that these are not native to Hawaii and the state is trying to get rid of them. Here's a photo.

  2. I'm pretty sure its a crown of thorns. I've seen them in Tahiti, Micronesia, Socorro so i would imagine they are native to Hawaii.

  3. Acanthaster Planci - Found all over the Indo Pacific and Red Sea - they are definitely a fairly common sight in Hawaii - populations apparently are under control here, though -

Although I did do a dive last week - a mile offshore - 160 feet of water - we found two huge sunken Pu'u (cinder cones) that must have had 2-300 of them covering almost every inch. Never seen anything like it before.
