I took this image at Los Morros de Potosi off of Zihuatanejo Mexico last week. It took me forever with my ID books to figure out that the bigger fish is a Juvenile Rock Croaker, but I still don't know what the small goby on the lower left is. The Rock Croaker was tricky since the juvenile and the adults look completely different. I eventually found it in Daniel Gotshall's book "Sea of Cortez Marine Animals"
As usual, click on the image for more details.
Steve - I'm not surprised it took you so long with the ID for the larger fish...I've waited three years now for someone to say something other than a type of Pacific coast juvenile drum .
From Punta Mita, MX (a long time ago )
Good luck with the blenny...
Matt,
Yep, you've got the same guy. It does look a little like a drum, but I didn't think there were any drums in the Pacific. I am pretty sure that it is a Rock Croaker (corvinita gungo). I was diving at Punta Mita earlier this year and didn't see any. It wasn't until this recent trip to Zihuatanejo that I saw them. They were quite plentiful. The dive conditions were dreadful and we only did 4 dives, of which only one was remotely conducive to photography.
The goby looks something like a Redlight Goby (gobio semaforo), but it doesn't seem to have a dark spot at the base of the tail. It is probably something common, but I am stumped.
