strobe flood induces strange problems

8 posts
  1. Hello

Unfortunately, I have had a problem in the weekend 4-6 May.

I dive with an ikelite canon 20D setup and two DS-50's.

During the dive, one strobe behaved erratic, which I could fix by going manual. Only after the dive, I found out that the 70462's battery compartment had leaked, well, flooded. I rinsed the compartment with fresh water and removed most of the goo in it.

Now both strobes fire erratically. ie, of and on a black image, or an image that is totally blown (so without TTL) The strange thing is that this happens with both strobes (also when switched places). The circuitry still allows the up down buttons to be used, but they sometimes get stuck (switching the strobe on and off solves this for a wee while)

I also checked if the strobes would fire with a single analog sync cord. Both strobes behave erratic. When using an old Ai strobe, the strobe syncs allright with the older single cord and (on the master position) on the double sync cord

I already contacted ikelite to ask where the problem would be, but they want to see everything to give a diagnose. I just have to send in the items that are faulty.

If it is possible, I would like to keep the housing with me, and not be left out for a month (also, insured shipping is quite steep with more weight and more value). On the other hand, I want it to be allright...

I am looking into getting a friends DS strobe and synch cord to check the housing. Will it matter if is a DS-125 strobe instead of DS 50 ?

    so what to do....

  2. to refrase the question:

will a test with a DS 125 give enough insurance that the housing circuitry is working, or do I need a DS 50 for testing.

Yes, both of them are TTL, you can also try to test with another TTL sync cord.

  4. I am asking because there is a DS-50 / DS-125 switch on the camera tray. is it possible that that the circuitry works one way, and not on the other position.

  5. FYI: I send the whole bit to Ikelite, since the housing gave also problems with another flash..

  6. Got it all back from Ikelite yesterday (3 weeks, thats very good). Turns out it was a flooded and broken synch as well. Will check my cord routing in a separate message....

  7. Do a test with a new sync cord and the DS125's to eliminate the housing as the cause. If new cords and the 125's don't work send in the housing and the strobes to Ikelite so they can find the root cause. Send in the cords and strobes as well because they "could" be bad. Ikelite would probably prefer you send the whole system in for a check up.

  8. Sorry for the confusion, Ikelite already checked the housing, cord and both strobes. Turned out the cord was flooded and broken as well.....

So I already took your advice :-)
