Tokina and 105 in Little Cayman

Nice. I'm headed to Grand Cayman on Thursday, plan to get my 10-17 wet. (In a housing of course)
-
the key with the tokina is getting close enough and getting the camera to autofocus on the actual subject. small stuff is real hard to see even with the the new virewfinder and the tokina.

Ah, a Tokina 10-17mm turtle photo. I have been taking the odd turtle here on Sipadan with the funky cold tokina.

Jeff, Alex and Octopus,
Even though you boys are all Nikon, in the Canon world using my Tokina 10-17mm, especially at 17mm, I found myself switching back and forth between Ai Servo (continuous focus, with ability to pull the trigger at any time, guaranteeing some pics were OOF) and simply using single shot and eyeballing wich focus point lit up.
Not sure what similar focus modes are called on the Nikon D200 / D2X models, but I ended up getting better results back with the plethora of squid using single shot.
Go figure

I'd suggest trying both AF modes on your D200, Jeff....

I shan't post any turtles - seems a bit unfair considering I am at Sip!

p.s. I've not had any focus issues on my camera (D2X), but I think if you are having focus issues then David's advice of using AF-S (the Nikon name) is the right way to go.

Problem is my eyes, sometimes can't see the focus spot in the viewfinder to aim it. I have switched from AF-s to AF-c seem to work better.

My first attempt with the Tokina 10-17 with Subal FE port (105VR extension ring, 15mm I think) at Grand Cayman this last weekend. Fun lens.

I've used the lens without an extension ring, it protruded well into the dome. I will try it in my pool with the 12-24mm extension ring, may need a thinner one to optimize the photos.

Yes, the 12-24 ring is too long, you will get vignetting.
The narrower one I got from Ryan at Reef seems to work perfectly - it is apparently the same as the extender used for the 105VR.
