Nikon 105 Vr w/ S&S NX compact macro port base

  1. HIIIII

currently i'm using Sigma 105mm macro lens

with Sea&Sea NX compact macro port base + Macro port base 79

    my question is

if i buy the new nikon 105mm VR, will it fit into this housing??

    or

I have to buy the new DX compact macro port base + DX macro port base? (the new port from sea&sea, only for nikon 105mm VR)

it's kinda of waste of money, if i really need to buy the DX compact maro port base...

just imagine, if i want to use, nikon 60mm macro lens,

it means i have to swich bck to the OLD NX compact macro port base + Macro port base M

    :)

    Please help meeeee

    Thx you

    Andree

  2. Andree,

Are you using the Compact Macro Port S (56211) with the NX Compact Macro Port base (56201)? If so the new 105mm VR will not fit.

I faced a similar dilemma a couple of weeks ago. I was shooting my 60mm with the NX Custom Flat Port, and shooting my 105mm by adding the 40mm extension ring to the Flat Port. When I got the new 105VR it would not fit in this combination.

The new lens was too wide for the NX Custom Flat Port due to a ridge inside the end of the port. The ridge seems to serve no purpose that I could see. I spoke with Ryan at Reef Photo, and he came up with a solution that would not force me to carry multiple macro ports. Ryan ground out the ridge for me, and now I can shoot the 105mm VR with the NX Custom Flat Port and the XS extension ring.

I shot it all last weekend, and it worked great. I don't need as big of an extension ring since the new 105mm VR does not telescope out like the old one did. I already had the XS extension ring for use with my dome port for the Tokina 10-17 FE.

IMHO I would ditch the Compact macro port and pick up a NX Custom Flat Port (with the XS extension ring), and have the modification made to the Flat Port to allow for the fatter 105 lens.

    YMMV

  3. Hi YMMV

i do have the Compact Macro Port S (56211). I only use it when i want to shoot using Nikon 60mm.

However, when i'm using Sigma 105mm, i cant use Compact Macro Port S, it's too short, instead i'm using Compact Macro Port L (the long one)

If you said that by mixing Compact Macro Port S + XS extension ring = CAN USE FOR Nikon 105 VR

    then maybe...

i can just buy the Compact Macro Port M !!!

Since the combination of Compact Macro Port S + SX Extention Ring is equal to Compact Macro Port M length. ( the one that Sea&Sea recomended for Nikon 105mm macro--->the old one)

    Is this possible???

    What do you think?

    Sorry to trouble you..

    Best Regards & Thank You

    Andree,

I do not use the Compact Macro Port. I am actually using the NX Custom Flat Port (product # 56231) with my 60mm. It is this port that has the ridge that was ground out to accomodate the 105mm VR. Here is a picture of the port.

When I shoot the 105mm VR I add the XS Extension Ring (product # 50261). Here is a picture of the XS Extension Ring.

And here is the NX Custom Flat Port with the XS Extension Ring.

When I used to shoot my old 105mm I used the NX Custom Flat Port and the Extension Ring 40.

Sea & Sea says that you have to use the DXC Macro Port 50 (product # 30106) and the DX Macro Port Base (product # 30105). The only problem with that is you would need two different ports for teh 60mm & the 105mm VR. To me this was too much of a hastle. That's when I went to Ryan at Reef Photo. He is the one that came up with the soulution of grinding down the ridge in the NX Custom Flat Port. Now both of my macro lenses work with just one port and one small extension ring.

I am very happy with this set up. You should contact Ryan.

and just so you know YMMV stands for "Your Milage May Very". :) In other words, you may not like the same set up that I do. But IMHO I think you will.

  5. I asked the very same question here a few weeks ago, though maybe worded a little differently. Since I have no ports to start with, I wanted to just have one port set up for both the 60 and the 105 VR and save myself a little money and space by not needeing two completely different sets of ports. The new DX series ports are recommended for the 105 VR.

One answer came back with using the DX Macro Port Base and the DX Macro Port 50 for BOTH lenses!

If there is a reason not to do this I would still like to hear any disagreements.

  6. Ohhhhhhhhhhhh,

Sorry i though your name is YMMV

    hahahaha :)

Anyway, Thx you so much for the pic, now i really understnd the way you set up for shooting Nikon 105mm VR.

I wish i have the same set up as yours...

The problem is, i already set up my Rig base on Compact NX macro port base, For example

For Nikon 60mm = NX compact macro port base + Compact macro port S

For Nikon 18-55mm = same set up as above

For Sigma 105mm = NX compact macro port base + Compact macro port 79 (L)

For Nikon 12-24mm = NX compact macro port base + CX Compact dome port

Base from you you are telling me, i "think" i can use the combination of

NX compact macro port base + Compact macro port M

the reason why i think that i can use this set up is, the length of NX compact macro port base + Compact macro port M is equal to NX Custom Flat Port + SX extention ring that you are using...

And i never intended to shoot in Manual focus for This Nikon 105mm VR.

IF THIS set up can fit the nikon 105mm VR, then all my problem is solved :)

I wish my dive shop have the Compact macro port base M...

that way i can try it right away :)

  7. I do not have a 105 lens but do have a standard NX port. This has that same ridge piece mentioned above near the inside front of the port. I used a sharp knife and just sliced away a little material so that I could fit a Sigma mid range zoom inside. It is a very easy modification to do and is not as drastic as it sounds.

If I get a 105 VR I will use the this port with an extention ring as pictured above. I've wondered about the other Sea & Sea port options but actually really like the standard NX port. It is the same as the custom one without the knobs and I actually quite like the rubber clad bumber design it has. If you ever want the manual focus option I think the custom NX port is the only option. A possible benefit of the new dedicated port option for the 105VR is that it may be a little slimmer and maginally less bulky.

  8. There is another option, but it was more than I wanted to spend, and would put me right back to having too many ports to lug around.

Athena makes a really nice port for the 105mm VR. It is pre threaded on the outside of the port to add on the INON macro lens. This gives you the flexibility to shoot the straight 105mm, or to add on the external lens without being stuck with it for the entire dive. It also gives you way more than 1:1.

I am currently using a Woody's diopter when I want to get a little fuller frame. I love my Woody's, but if I'm not mistaken, the INON is more than twice the magnification of the Woody's.

But, after I priced out the Athena port I could not justify the cost.
