  1. Here is a great example of what's happening on Ningaloo Reef.

Kel came accross this Potato Cod while Whale Sharking today.

Yesterday there was 46- 4x4 with boats at the boat ramp?

Seems more and more are coming here each year :)

I have lived here for 12 years and have never seen the boat ramp so full as it has been this year :)

I wonder what this place will be like in another 5- 10 years as more and more recreactional fishing folks bring their boats here and kill and harrass the marine animals just for FUN :)

  2. hi wagsy,

depressing stuff, i can tell you what it will be like, as this has already happened to

where we dive in coastal ecuador, fish like this will become legendary one off sightings

about every six years and then a fisherman willl become even more legendary by killing it.....it happens

and it's very very very sad.

get on the campaign trail wagsy, don't believe you can't do anything about it....

raise hell....it's the only way.....but it's very tiring!!!

  3. Well we have no hope of changing the people's ways here. It would be like telling a Muslin that they should convert to another faith. :)

We are going to concentrate on educating the young generation instead and we have some great products and projects comming up in the next 12 months. :)

  4. Unbelievable...well actually quite believable :) Why do so many fisherman get off on killing for the sake of killing. And why do so many folks kill and eat (or not eat) endangered species when they have no need whatsoever to do so. Humans are amazingly destructive....and even more amazingly protective of their destructive habits.

  5. Its a terrible state of affairs..

In promoting areas of beauty we can actually endanger life by giving away their secrets. But wat can you do...

    Dive safe

Is that a skirt or shorts Kelly's wearing... :) Kinda 'short' don't you think..I've got to look out for my blood pressure Wags.. :)

  6. I think you are right Paul that the younger generation is our hope in all this. Most of our generation are too stubborn and set in their ways to see what is happening. We may still have a little time, although our kids will inherit an even bigger mess than we have today.

Heather is in the UK at the moment and cannot discuss conservation, global warming or any topic that is considered green without being shot down by her peers (and family) who see people like us as eco-hippies and all these issues as either hysteria, or a way that Tesco and other supermarkets can charge more for produce that has a green label of sorts (and dubious at that) plastered across it.

  7. I think that this highlights the recreational fishing issue here in Australia, it is a massive problem. I can only speak for NSW but the bag limits and quotas are absolutely ridiculous, and that only encourages either wastage or a black market trade.

It is rare occurance to see sharks and big fish in this area without hooks in their mouths!

In some cases for example with Bream the recreational fishers take more than the commecial fisheries, and what sustainablility checks are done on the recreational guys...... Very little...

Nick I think most folks are busy going about their normal lives that they are in denial and just don't want to hear it as it threatens their little world be it business or lifestyle.

Governments want to keep their people dumb so they go to work and pay their taxes, fill them with football, cricket, fishing, beer or religion, to keep them occupied so they don't think too much about other things. They don't want a population full of smart, deep logical thinking people.

We have folks that are farmers and it did not rain last year so no crop, but they are busy putting in some crop going about their ways as if it's going to be a normal season. It's hard to have a conversation about global warming to them as well. :)

    Interesting times ahead <_<

  10. Unfortunately we all suffer from 'head in the sand' syndrome to some extent. It's a little like trying to find a cure for world hunger, AIDS or a solution to Iraq or Palestine. The news is full of disaster stories but everyone becomes numb unless the horror spills over and affects them directly - only then do they become converts.

There is just not enough of the main stream population affected by loss of reef systems. When we run out of cod we just move over to Orange Roughie - people will not really notice the transition from fish and chips to fungus and algae as it is a transition. Even when the transition speeds up people stay in denial ....

Only thing that keeps me sane is to keep taking video for posterity!
