Mediterranean Blenny

  1. Hello All,

Someone uploaded a few Mediterranean blenny images to http://www.fishdb.co.uk/ as seaweed blennies (Parablennius marmoreus). Since the seaweed blenny is restricted to the Western Atlantic this can't be right but I've not been able to find any images on the web to make a convincing identification and don't have ID books from that region. Any help would be appreciated. Here is some more info:

Images taken in L'Escala/Spain (near Barcelona I believe).

Both fish may be opposite sexes of one species or two different species.

The dark one has a bright blue spot at the start of the dorsal like the dark form of a seaweed blenny can have too (only faintly shown on the images)

The dark one has a blueish color on its chin (not shown on the images)

Some of these blennies (the seaweed blenny being one of them) can have quite variable coloration so I hope someone familiar with the region has seen this one before.

    She also wrote

"It is black apart from a spot on the dorsal fin just behind the neck which

it seems to be able to flash - like an eye - when disturbed. The spot

becomes bright (peacock) turquoise but otherwise fades into a dark colour.

There may also be some blue colouring under the chin."
