Sea and Sea i-TTL convertor MK 1 corrosion?

  1. Hi Guys,

    I have been using a S&S i-ttl mk1 convertor on my Nexus housed D70S with S&S ys90duo strobe.

We have been swimming together three times with no problems until now. When I entered the water and turned on the convertor last weekend, the red light came on...It had been showing green up until then.

I continued the dive and the images were looking good on the LCD screen. When home, I soaked the camera in a warm soapy bath overnight and got the shock of my life when I went to dry it off the next day.

The battery cover on the i-TTL convertor was covered in a green hard gunk. This is hard enough that it has to be scratched off. Obviously the battery was running down, but what would cause the corrosion. I have included a picture for you to look at. It looks like the green coloration that you get on brass when it has been in the water...

There is no sign of any corrosion inside the battery compartment or anywhere else on the camera/strobe.

    Any ideas would be appreciated...

    Bruce

  2. Sea & Sea uses a positive ground on this converter, which causes stray current corrosion w/ Nexus housings. You need to isolate your camera tray and tripod screw from the camera. Teflon tape works...

Your dealer should have informed you of this when you purchased the TTL Converter for use with a Nexus housing.

  4. Hi Ryan,

This convertor was leant to me to try. I taped the camera base with electrical tape, but didn't know about the teflon for the screw?

My main concern now is how to clean it???

    Any ideas?

I don't think it is something you can clean...

  6. Bruce,

I have the Nexus D200 with the sea and sea TTL Converter II, i covered the nexus base with contact and replaced the mounting screw a nylon screw. I have taken it diving 5 times and so far has not problems. I will keep an eye out for any problems.

    Sad to here your problems.
