Another pool noodle floatation trial

  1. Dove the other day w/the new 105mm VR, Macro Mate and Aquaview and Wow was it heavy to hold one handed. So while at the local box store buying a wading pool for the dog made a big investment in a US$1.50 Pool Noodle. Cut it to fit my 6†TLC arms and there you go.

The two 6†pcs did not make the housing neutral but really helped. At 10-20 feet there was minimal compression. But by 45 feet you could see the compression with a reduction in the circumference of the material of about 30-40%. Still helped in making the housing manageable with one hand.

To make it truly neutral you would have to attach at lease another 6â€-12†of material. I split the noodle in half and was going to rap it around the port extension but was too lazy at the dive site to try it. If you are looking for an inexpensive, disposable fix this might be worth playing with.

  2. I used one of the pool noodles with my D200 and Subal housing last summer. It made my housing almost float at the surface but it was definitetly negative at 60'. I am going to give the Stix arms and floats a try this summer and see if I get more floatation at depth. If you have Ultralight arms, the pool noodles slide right over the ballhead and the arm.

    Hi Herb,

Just bought a pool noodle today to put on my ike arms on my ike D70 housing. Gearing up for my first digital photo dive. Heading to Bonaire on tuesday. Wondering if I will need the noodles on the ike housing?

  4. After demoing (sp?) the Stix system I ordered several pcs last week. The material they use avoids the compression issues with the pool noodle. But if you are looking for a quick solution for 1/60th the price the pool noodle has some merits.

before you use the noodle check that you need it at all, I have the same setup as you and its a little negative in water, but its so little that I don't really feel that I need more floating. remember that this device has its limitations also.
