HC 7 Still Images

  1. Has anyone used the still capability of this camera UW? What were you opinions of the quality of the images? Can you get good-descent quality photos which prints can be made from? Does any one have examples they could post?

    Thanks

with the right lighting, you could get a "decent" shot... more comparable to a basic point n shoot on auto quality than say a DSLR though... Unfortunately I didn't use the still function last weekend. I'm off to Anilao Philippines for a 5 day weekend next week with the HC7 and will try to remember to take a few snaps... Other than that, I've found taking screen grabs from the HDV footage pretty nice!

Do you think the screen grabs from the video would have enough resolution to make a good print? I would appreciate a few stills if you get chance!

Bluefin, here is a direct screen capture from the HDV footage to the memorystick on the camera. Output is 1440x810 pixel. If you shoot in the dedicated still camera mode, then the photos will be 2848x1602 pixel.

  5. Sorry, this guy is only half in focus, but should give you an idea of the image quality. I was too busy taking video, so only took 6 stills, in this is the best of them (sad to say - I hate surge!)

  6. Took a few more still images with the HC-7 this weekend, I've attached one for anyone interested (cropped to 1600x1200)

  7. Don't even bother trying to take stills while shooting video, the pictures look really grainy. Stills by themselves can look good.

  8. Some cool pics there.

Even just grabbing a screen grab from a HDV timleline can be great as well if the water is clear and there is lots of light/lights. We have used HDV video screen grabs on brochures we have designed no problems

Here is a screen grab from the FX1.

That's a very cool frame grab. Did you de-interlace the clip or the resulting image file?

  10. Image was grabbed from a EDIUS HDV timeline with just one simple click of the mouse :D

Here are the settings in EDIUS you need to do so it keeps it 16.9 etc.

The pic grabs then do not need to be deinterlaced.

You can set it to save to many different format types.
