I am planning a trip for a small group of divers in early March to dive with, film, and photograph sailfish off of Isla Mujeres, Mexico. We had a group interested in the trip, but timing issues with various group members began to get in the way, so I decided to put out an open call for divers that may find this interesting. It will be a land-based trip, with an experienced sailfish captain. The boat and captain have done this before, although the BBC was the first to film the Isla Mujeres sailfish only a couple years ago. Right now, the only date open is beginning 3/1/08 with the number of days to be decided by group consensus. I would say 5-7 days, and the cost per diver for the boat will be approximately $200-250 per day. Hotel accommodations can range from rustic to very nice, and we would be responsible for transporting tanks to the boat each day via golf cart. The weather can be rough, and the sailfish could be anywhere from 5-60 miles offshore. But generally speaking, we expect clear warm water, and anywhere from a few to as many as 30 or more sailfish feeding on sardine bait balls in the open water. This trip should only be considered by very experienced divers who have had experience with large pelagic fish (billfish, sharks, etc.), blue water, currents, etc. It is not first come, first served and I'm not running this as a commercial trip for profit. I want to make sure I have the right divers on this trip, so we can all have a great, unique, adrenaline-filled, and safe experience. If you're interested, contact me for more details.
