Ikelite 20D sync cord routing

3 posts
  1. Hi all. I recently had a bit of trouble that was both linked to a flooded strobe and, to my surprise; a broken and flooded sync cord. Since the cord was new, and to my knowledge I really thought the position through i thought I might post it.

The complete setup is in this picture:

From the bulk head, it is passed under the wingnut, tightened up by wrapping the coiled part of the right strobe around the other wingnut and then whereever they need to go.

This seems the routing that David Haas suggests in this post

the difference with how I used to do it, is that the cord then looped between the arms and the handle: this might be the cause of the broken cord, if i moved the arm too much under water.

is it also necessary to keep special care of the parts where the sync cord exits the glands? Those positions are most prone to flexing. Should i tae a strain relieve, or just use it plain. this also goes for the following part:

i thought it might be wise to use a bit of rubber band (or a tiewrap for a more permanent solution, to make sure the cords only turn on the coiled part (where they are much less vulnerable).

Any thoughts? I do have a spare now, but really dont want to have to use that...

  2. I try not to have my sync-cord tightly wound around or pulled by anything - I would imagine that it can handle some bending (it is flexible!) a little better than constant tension...

  3. I wouldnt think it was too tight, but then I broke one :-(. I said tightened up, but only so far that the junction box sits close to the housing, there is still flex.

Should i tape the junction box somewhere, so the cord can get some easier loops?. It is quite heavy; if i don't loop the cord somewhere, it will hang down in a big loop; which is a nightmare scenario waiting to happen.
