Wet vs. Dry Diopters

7 posts
  1. I've read numerous threads about the Macromate and Woody's diopter. As someone coming from a compact background, a wet diopter seems like the right choice because they offer some additional flexibility when shooting with a prime lens. Although I could be mistaken, I also figure that I won't need to buy as many ports/extensions.

Naturally, there must be some drawback(s) to using wetmates, otherwise everyone would be doing it. Are the optics so different? Are they more difficult to use? Or is it something else?

    Thanks,

    David

  2. Hi David,

There are two types of diopters - normal and achromatic. The acromats have two elements and they cut down dramatically on CA. You can get dry acrhomat diopters in just about every size. I like the Canon 500D and 250D models - which typically cost $120.

For wet-mate diopters, only a few of them are achromatic and they are a lot more expensive. But then they give you a lot more flexibility to take them on and off on a dive. The Macromate is a good example - it's about $500.

Generally (not always) you can get stronger dry diopters (+4 for example) than you get get in an equivalent wet-mount.

    Cheers

    James

  3. While the dry diopters usually give you stronger magnification they limit you to your shooting. I use a wt diopter for teh flexability to put it on or take it off as the shot calls for.

  4. I prefer the wet diopters but James is right, how much doe are you willing to blow? Using a dry diopter limits you to that focal range while a wet diopter, obviously, offers the flexibility to remove it. But if you are after a certain subject, say as in hermit crab eyes, a dry diopter can give you more juice. This shot was taken using a 4T diopter and 2x converter. No wet diopter could have given me that magnification, so it really depends on your budget and subject matter.

  5. anyone know who makes a wet diopter for an aquatica macro port?

This is made to fit the Aquatica port. There's also a flip version. The less expensive ones are too small for the diameter of the Aquatica, unless you have someone custom make you an adapter.

    Cheers,

Check this thread about fitting the Woody's diopter on the Aquatica macro port
