i have just returned from a fantastic trip to sipadan and komodo. i am new to photography and have posted a few shots here for you guys to look at and give me your advice on what i should be doing. i am getting to grips with macro photography and use a 60mm canon. wide angle shots however are really hard for me to get right. i am using a 10-22mm canon lens on a canon 350D.

I am struggling with wide angle, particularly sun bursts. the background seems to lose all its blue colour and ends up white as if over exposed. this is an example of what i mean
shot settings.....1/40 F4.0 ISO 400
now i have been reading some articles on here and other forums since this shot was taken and am i correct in saying that what would have given a better shot, would have to have had my settings at 1/125 F4.0 ISO 100

Stu, yea try to keep it on ISO 100 at all times if possible. Especially with anything that is shot with strobe.
What you want to do with WA is:
1: Choose your composition
2: Set the fstop based on how far you are from your subject, your strobe comes with a handy chart for this that you can stick on it
3: Now that you have set your fstop, choose your shutter speed using the light meter on the camera, for best blues choose the shutter speed that gets you to -1 on the meter
4: make sure your strobes are pointing in the right direction
5: fire away!
6: look at the results and adjust accordingly...
The main thing is that your shutter speed is controlling the background blues. More natural light you need a faster shutter, less light you need a slower shutter...
Hope that helps

cheers mike, i have to get it right next time as i will be in cocos and i dont want to return from there with a load of images i cant show anyone.....

No worries, just remember to choose the fstop first, then choose the shutter based on your light meter in the camera. And make sure you point the camera in the same direction you will be shooting.
Have a great time in Cocos! Really nice diving. However, if you going there, you might need to up your ISO to 200 or even 400 at times, very dark water. That is the only time i up my ISO....
If you are getting a shutter speed of less than 1/30 then up your ISO...

mike what do you set the lens at, i set mine to infinity all the time, is this correct.?
also does the same principal of setting the f stop first if i am shooting without strobes.
cheers, stew
