Sigma 10-20mm

  1. I've upgraded from a Canon 20D to the full frame 5D. Looking for superwide angle lens and am considering the Sigma 10-20mm autofocus f2.8 lens. Anyone with experience with this lens? Best alternatives? I am using Ikelite housing.

    Thanks for your input.

Unless Sigma came out with a different version, that lens is for DX size camera and has a 4-56 aperture, when used ion a 5D, severe vignetting would occur, best look into full frame compatible lenses, I belive the 12-24 from sigma does cover full frame

You are absolutely right. Would the 12-24 be a suitable lens for CFWA, or are there better choices? Sigma Fish Eye or other zooms?

  4. Given the choice of either the 12-24 or a 15mm fisheye, I would most likely opt for the fisheye, more bang for bucks and better sharpness all around. just remeber to be up close and personnal with these fisheye, my main concern is that you would shoot from too far away as many user of theses lenses all too often do. close is not good enough, you need pissed off drill sargeant in a booth camp kind of close.

With the fisheye, do you need to center the close-up objects to avoid distortion. I've used ultra-wide (weitwinkel) before on my 20D, and didn't need to worry about the distortion of the fisheye. Can you point me to any links? I've read much of the books on CFWA, but not specifically about the fisheye. There has been discussion here about using it with a 1.4 extender. Do you still have to worry about edge distortion?

  7. There is still some edge distortion with a 1.4 extender - it's more distortion than with a fisheye on a 20D, but less than the fisheye alone on a 5D.

The edge distortion is noticable if you're shooting something with straight edges. If you're shooting on a reef, you won't notice it because reefs don't have many straight lines.

  8. The Sigma 12-24 for FF cameras is a pretty good lens. I used it to shoot sharks in the Bahamas. I like it because it will work on FF cameras and also the 1.3x crop bodies too.

I went to the store and tried out a few of them in order to make sure I got a sharp copy and one that was "aligned" properly.

    Cheers
