Ikelite 8" Dome and the Tokina 10-17mm

Lens performance reviews like the one published at Underwater Photography (issue 37) about the Tokina 10-17mm lens, are leading me to decide to buy this lens (instead of the Nikon 10.5mm). Stepehen Frink's topic here at Wetpixel's forum has done the rest.

And now, my question: Is anyone out there shooting the 10-17mm under an Ikelite 8" Dome? Which experience have you had?

The Tokina lens is 71.1mm long and the Nikon only 62.5mm. Are this 8.6mm difference playing a significant role (corner sharpness, etc)?

I was just asking myself the same question for a subal housing with a 8" DP-FE2 Subal Dome.

I read in Alexs' article that most users prefer to add a 10-15mm extention ring. See also here http://wetpixel.com/forums/index.php?s=&am...st&p=132725

Will it affect the compatability with the zoom gear work? I have to sort this out.

Anyhow the 10-17 seems a really nice fisheye and as I don't have a 10.5 I think I'll buy one.

The problem with Ikelite is that, as far as I know, there are no extension rings available.

The only option is using the next port body, and with Ikelite that means switching from the #5510.10 port, which is 1.3" (3.302cm) long, to the #5510.16 port (which is 2.047" (5.200cm) long), and that's a huge distance!!

My concerns around the 10-17 and the 8"Dome (with the shortest port), are based also on Ikelite's port chart specifications. On one hand Ikelite recommends the 5510.10 port for the Tokina 10-17mm, but on the other one, when you look at the maximal lens size Ikelite says will fit this port, the Tokina lens is longer. It's only a very slight difference, but indeed longer (2.79" long for a maximal length of 2.75", in mm the difference is 1mm). Should I care about that mm? Probably not.

Before I buy, I think I'll wait until someone who tried the lens under the Ikelite Dome gives me some advice.

It works fine with the #5510.10 port extension.

Actually the #5510.10, #5510.16... #5510.28 are extension rings that all connected to the 8" port.

I can also verify that Ike's 8" dome port works fine with the 5510.10 and the Tokina 10-17 fisheye. I use a Canon RebelXT with it:

How do you get rid of the lens hood in the image? Do you guys just crop it in lightroom? I have the ikelite with 5510.11 extension and toking 10-17mm

I'm not sure what you are asking - are you saying the lens hood appears in your image?  If the lens hood is appearing normally you need to rotate the hood or port if it is fixed so the longer petals are top and bottom and level with the camera sitting flat.  Which port are you using?  The FL port charts specify a 5510.45 port with 5510.11 extension.

Is that Ikelite’s recommendation for the port and extension combination for that lens? If it is, a lot of folks need to (literally) shave off part of  - or all of - the lens hood.

But obviously before you try that, check you have the right port/extension combination.

First thing is to be sure that the lens hood is in the right position.  Is the dome the 5510.45?  that is listed as being an 8" dome.  In any case that is the current recommendation from the port chart.  This is the combination here:

the dome should be sitting like it's shown in the photo with the whole rig sitting upright.  The above combination should not show the dome in the image even at 10mm on an APS_C camera.  Which camera are you using with the Tokina?

Be sure your extension is fully seated and the dome installed properly.  You can check for the dome being in the photo on land, don't have to wait for the next dive.

and that is the cause of your problem,  The Tokina 10-17 is an APS-C lens which while it can be made to work with full frame is not that great outside of the APS_C crop.  But more importantly for your situation on full frame it has a wider field of view and as you found will vignette up to 15mm or so focal length.  

The solution to this problem is to remove the dome hood or restrict your-self to 15-17mm or so.  At shorter focal lengths it does not completely cover the sensor.  The normal solution of using a shorter extension is not an option as far as I know as the extension is the shortest offered by ikelite and I don't believe you can use the dome without an extension.  Of course you also need to confirm proper dome-hood orientation.

is there a good fisheye you reccomend for a full frame camera? 

you could look at the sigma 15mm fisheye or the Canon 8-15,  The 15mm won't fit in 4" domes .  The 8-15 is effectively either an 8mm that produces a circular fisheye image or a 15mm fullframe fisheye.  In between it's neither circular or frame filling,

I used to use the Sigma 15mm on a Nikon D800. I really liked it and it was my go-to wise-angle lens for the full frame camera body.
