S&S YS90AUTO, INON or S&S YS 110 strobes

  1. Hi All

    Need some advice here.

My set-up is canon A640. I always play with manual or AV setting. For strobe, I am thinking of INON or YS110. INON D2000 seems to receive positive feedback but it is discontinued, so would one consider buying nevertheless? Any pro and cons of INON D2000s?

Is YS90 AUTO recommended? I heard feedback that YS90DX performs better as it has ttl. YS90AUTO has the "auto exposure" feature, does that mean it automatically reads the ambient light and set the flash output accordingly? I have a friend who encounter difficulties in forcing the flash output when taking pics at 5-10m or noon time (when the sun is above us with strongest light from mother nature). Such problem does not exist when taking pictures at deeper end/night diving. Now there is YS110, is that a better choice compared to the older models?

When it comes to macro shooting, am I right to say that manual setting is preferred over ttl on strobe?

Looking at the specs, INON D2000 and YS110 are catered for consumer digi cameras which means if I need to upgrade in time to come, I would have to upgrade my strobe as well?

Your views/expertise in this area is much appreciated.

    Thanks!

  2. http://www.digitaldiver.net/strobes.php Is an excellent place to start. Many people go through the same difficulties in selecting a strobe. As a amateur, I can attest that strobe issues are my number 1 problem. Here are a few things to consider.

    1. Connection of the strobe to the camera housing. A hardware connection is best. The only way to achieve this is through the hotshoe on your camera. Hardware connections will always fire unless the connection is flooded or the cable is broken.

    2. If your digicam doesn't possess a hotshoe then a fiber optic connection is your next best solution. This will allow the camera's flash to trigger your external optical slave strobe in almost any conditions, high noon and otherwise. Optical connections are good if they have a solid connection on the strobe and the camera housing.

    3. Inon and the YS90auto, YS110 all have wireless ttl. Personally wireless anything underwater scares me but from what I've seen on here and other underwater sites the Inon achieves this beautifully.

These flashes are suppose to actually send out a false reading to your camera to cause the cameras internal flash not to fire. Pretty cool. This saves your internal battery life on your camera and eliminates would-be backscatter.

    4. Check compatibility with your camera. I've heard of some issues with that.

I think I will just go straight to the point - I am actually considering whether to substitute my YS90AUTO for a new INON strobe instead. Any views/experience on these would be appreciated.
