unfortunate housing flood

  1. I've been taking underwater stills for about 2 years. My wife decided before our recent trip to Cozumel that she would like to get a cheap video setup. So we purchased the Stingray and TR101 as a package deal with lights. Well after taking pictures the entire first dive of the trip, the camera somehow flooded between the time my wife surfaced and the time I pulled her camera out of the rinse bucket. The camera was a complete loss. The housing seems fine. There's no corrosion to speak of.

The latches on the Stingray housing rotate. When I picked it up out of the rinse bucket one of the latches was completely rotated out and is the reason the housing flooded. Has anyone else experienced this with a similar Light and Motion Housing. These latches seem to be a poor design. Has anyone done any DIY upgrade of the latches to improve their performance? Any suggestions? We have a second camera coming to test the housing. So if all is well again, I'll want to do something with the latches to prevent a second occurance.

  2. Gary, sorry to hear about your flood.

Yep, those plastic latches on the Stingray are rubbish. At least on my Stingray II anyway. Don't know if Stingray III is the same. I've had them rotate open on mine a couple of times but thankfully no floods. The get looser with age as well. The only thing I can think of is gaffer tape over them.

  3. You can use a piece of inner tube cut into a strip ( think large rubber band ). Simply stretch it over the housing making sure it covers the latches.
