I have an Oly SP-350 connected to a housed FL-20 flash. As a complimentary strobe, I have the YS27DX. The problem is getting the YS27 to fire reliably. The housing on the FL20 is a flat port. I don't want to cover this up with the mounting adapter Sea and Sea sends out so I mounted it just below the flat port. I then got some reflective tape and placed it in a way that would try and direct stray light toward the fiber connection. This worked great around the house, in the dark etc when taking pictures of the family. Got it in the water and couldn't get the YS27 to fire without taking off the fiberoptic cable and aiming the strobe almost directly at the FL-20.
This has happened on two different dive trips when I thought the problem was solved through topside tests. The aiming of the strobes so far inward is a pain because it essentially creates some backscatter in the photo. I've attached a photo to show you what I'm talking about. Here's the problem in a nutshell as I see it and I'd love to hear your thoughts.
The fiber optic cable is coiled and really short so if you spread your strobes out, I believe the tension on the cable causes the problem.
What I think would solve this is a longer peice of fiber optic cable. Anyone know where I can get something like that? Any other suggestions would be appreciated...thanks,
