"Probably the best breaching humpback whale shot I will ever take"

And, a 100% crop from the photo (sharpened slightly):

    These images are HUGE.

  2. Wow! That's a fabulous shot Eric.

Just AAMOI, do you use a specialised software package to put your copyright notices on? If you do, would you mind sharing what it is? Thanks.

    Kevin

  3. One word: "WOW!" Amazing photo. Where were you when you took it?

  4. Nice. Where did you shoot the whale?

    Thanks.

  5. Off the coast of Kona.

I use a photoshop action that adds the watermark text to the center of an image, and then dropshadows it to make it visible on white backgrounds. Very simple.

The copyright text is added by Breezebrowser, which I use to make my html slideshows for the web, with a custom template.

  6. Nice shot Eric. You must have been pretty close to have gotten that much whale in with the lens at 190mm. When I was on Maui, I had a 210mm and never got more than 1/4 of the frame filled with blubber. Also, ISO 200 looks pretty good on that new camera of yours. One question: What kind of bait were you using to get the whale in so close? :freak: .

    Mike (sorry, couldn't resist . . .)

  7. hehehe. well, legally we're not allowed to approach a whale, and they probably would stop breaching if you motored up to them, anyway.

The breach took us completely by surprise (we missed the first breach), and I was lucky to get this second breach in focus. You can go here to see all three frames from the breach. The third frame I had to crop because the boat railing is blocking part of the shot.

  8. I'm Jealous

I just got back from Maui and thought I'd seen whales. Whales rolling, spouting and breaching (in the distance). You got a great photo here, and congratulations on your cover shot too.
