Singapore Hotels, eeny meany miney mo.....???

  1. Have decided to take advantage of an extra night, for a total of two, in Singapore on the way back through from Lembeh in September.

Singapore Air offers some great deals on some 4/5 star hotels, among them , Marina Mandarin, Raffles, and Shangri La..

Any thoughts , preferences, favorites, recommendations, warnings, experiences, from those that may have stayed at any of these ,and would care to pass on??

    Any help is sincerely appreciated.

Shangri La is OK, nothing to get excited about. Its main selling point is that it's right off Orchard Road (the far end), and so that much closer to the "Orchard Road Shopping" experience -- if that kind of thing makes you happy. (It's near the high-end stores like Paul Smith, DKNY, Prada etc.) I've always found it to be a bit dark and dingy, at least in the lobby area.

Marina Mandarin is OK as well. It's near the water, so if you do go this route get a room with a good view of the water as the foreground to Singapore's ever-changing skyline. This is pretty nice. You can also walk next door to the Oriental and have a steak at Morton's, or just go to the bar there between 5-7 p.m. and have free Morton's steak sandwiches during the martini happy hour. Lots of shopping at Suntec mall nearby.

As for Raffles, which one? The old Raffles Hotel is full of history and a wonderful place to stay. Raffles the Plaza is nice. And the Swissotel The Stamford is built on top of a mall with good shopping all around. Good views from here too if you can get a higher floor.

Lots of good food options at whichever hotel you choose. If given the choice, I would go with the Raffles option. But you won't go wrong with any of the three you mentioned.

  3. yup, you can't go wrong with any of these 3 choices.

shangri-la might be a little out of the way, and cabs would be the only way in or out of the hotel because its tucked away in a little corner. near, but not that near town.

marina mandarin is right beside the bay, lots of shopping, food, and also beside the esplanade (http://www.esplanade.com), which is a performing arts centre venue. probably the best choice of hotel in terms of making the most of your time.

the iconic raffles hotel is about 15-20 minutes walk away, so you get pretty much of everything that marina mandarin has to offer, but at a slightly higher price.

have a good time here! :D

I'm in the same situation in November. If you elect to stay in Singapore overnight, does

Singapore Airlines still have hotel deals? I know they do if you just have a really long

layover but I don't know if they do if it's your choice to stay over.

  5. Without knowing your budget, it's hard to give a reccomendation, but...

I transit SIN 4 to 6 times a year. Our prior favorite was either the Swissotel or the Raffles (at the Stamford), mostly the Raffles, because it was quiet and superb service.

The Raffles is especially pricey, though.

Lately we've been staying at the Pan Pacific. Call it the PanPac and you'll sound like a local. The price is about half for comparable levels of service, and the last several times we've been there, there was active renovating in progress at the lower levels. So we've switched to staying at the PanPac and been just as happy, for less.

Since you were considering the Raffles, you probabally won't get sticker shock from reserving a room on the Pacific Floor. Quiet floor, impeccable service, you will be wisked upstairs for personal check-in as soon as they know who you are. And since the drinks are free in the afternoon and evening in the special Pacific Floor lounge, you can even save money with no bar tab. It is worth every penny for the travel-weary.

    All the best, James
