Ikelite SS250, SS400 - old strobes

  1. There are a couple of cheap second hand Ikelite SS's I have my eye on, a 400 and a 250. Trouble is I can't find any web-based info on the Ikelite SS 250.

I'll probably go for the 250, using it with a D100 for wide angle stuff.

My questions are...does it have a modelling light? What controls does it have (assume the same as the other SS's but you never know). Why isn't there any info at all on this strobe in cyberspace? Is it compatible with my D100?

Does anyone out there know about this strobe???

  2. As I remember the Ikelite SS-250 is an older/weaker version wich was replaced by the SS-300 wich in turn was replaced by the SS-400. All used the same/similar housing.

I would go with the 400 because it would be much newer (or perhaps much less old is more accurate) as well as a stop brighter.

  3. If it's the 400 on Ebay right now, I really need that one.

If not, then never mind, just ignore me and forget what I just said.

The 400 and 250 have a mod light, and 3 power settings, full, 1/2, and 1/4

They take an old NiCad pack which is also no longer available. This strobe is also no longer warrantied by Ikelite if they have to do a repair and parts are slim.

It is not a digital strobe can can only be used with a special manual sync cord.

    Cheers

Never heard of a 250 but there was a 225. :ninja: Powerful strobes but very heavy and slow recycling. I use them locally but not on trips involving flying! See pic.

  5. I've gone for the 250, despite it's age and lack of batteries...

The 400 was on eBay - sold for AUS$550 or something - too much for my humble budget.

The 250 was cheap so I'm happy to play with it for the rare times when I'm doing wide angle, and upgrade when I've got a bit more money.

    Cheers all.
