Sony DSC-P5 and Strobe

  1. I currently have a Sony DSC-P5 and the marine pack. Could anybody give me some advice on what strobe I should/can use with it?

    Thanks in advance

    Paul

  2. I have just bought the Sony DCS-P9 & MPK-P9, which hasn't yet got wet. I too would like to know the best all-round strobe set-up!

Does any have a P9, how does it perform? Do you have any tips on use or settings etc? What to do or not to do (other than the obvious flooding, of course)!

  3. I believe this system (Sony) uses a preflash. There is no where on the Sony housing to connect strobe sync cord.

This limits you to the use of the Sea and Sea YS90DX or YS25DX or the Ikelite DS50 or DS125 with slave sensor.

    Hi,

    My DSC-P1 Not have Preflash.

And,Sony Digital cameras Not have preflash mostly.

IMHO, INON D-180 is best for DSC-P@

Unfortunate‚Œ‚™,I do not have D-180.(I have Epock).

This (DSC-P5/9 and D-180) combination no one try yet.

  5. Hi All,

I have a P-9 with the marine pak housing and have had it down past 120 ft. It is a terriffic set up with some limitations.

It does use a pre-flash and I have been using a 50w sony video light for photography until I get the Ikelite strobe set-up. You can attach various strobes and lights, but you have to buy the tray and arm to go with it. The red filter is very important as well.

Many of the dive shops here in Hawaii are buying up these systems for "rentals" out to the tourist population. Some of the operators here are using the fiber-optic sync cords on strobes but the consistant complaint is its fragility and need for frequent replacement.

There is no aperture / vs shutter priority on this camera (limitation), but for a point and shoot it is great. Macro is OK, but you wont be able to get in there REALLY tight. Also, if you put it on center spot focus for the AF, expect the little "shakey hand sign" in your viewfinder quite a bit. Placing the sharpness at +1 doesn't hurt.

This is my first U/W set-up, and I think it has been a great choice for the money.

I am going to try and post either some photos or a link to some photos. If there are other questions I might be able to help you with, please let me know. B)

I HAD a P9 but I got burgled at it went walkies, that's the bad news, the good news is I now have a Coolpix 5000  if you go to My Webpage you will see all my photos taken with my P9, I'll start adding the Coolpix photos in soon as my housing arrives and I can get it wet

  7. I have a Sony P9, and have just become the proud owner of a Sea & Sea YS-25DX strobe. I have yet to try the strobe underwater, but it works well in air.

The only thing I don't like so far is the fibre-optic cable. It connects to the strobe and front of the housing, and is just strung between the two, getting in the way and risking damage. I think it would be much better if it were routed inside the arm, I may try to to this myself.

I am going diving at the end of the month, so can post results if anyone is interested.

  8. I would be very interested in finding out what the results are from the Sea & Sea YS-25DX strobe as I believe you can adjust the exposure on it. Please post some of your results and let me know what you think of the strobe.

    Thanks

    Paul

I'll let you know how I get on, but I am no master photographer so don't expect to see magazine covers...

Great web page design. I really like the way it's organized and how it operates. I wish mine was as sophisticated.

How have the Coolpix photos turned out?

  11. Hey,

i use a Sony Cybershot DSC-P9 with the Sony MPK-P9 and Sea & Sea YS-50TTL strobe. Here in germany, Matthiasw Münster build a "brilliant" slave adapter for all Sea & Sea Nikonos and Motormarine strobes. The slave-adapter is programmable for pre-flash and other "specialty".

    Look at : http://www.muenster.de/~matthias/blitz/indexe.htm

I mean, is the best solution for the most of digi-cams. A cheep "used" Sea & Sea strobe you can buy at ebay. So you have a solution for 150 to 250 $. Mutch cheeper and powerfull then YS-25 DX strobe.

Thanks for the comments re-my site :D The Coolpix photos are getting there slowly :D there's a lot more to it than the P9 and the macro is supburb! :P I'm posting the pics to my site as I get them in the "Last Dive" section

  13. I have the same camera. First, you must get a strobe that can be slaved without a hard sync cord. There is no sync port on "our camera". Examples are the DS-50 and DS-125 coupled with the digital slave sensor. This sensor fires the strobe when it sees the camera flash fire. You must also either tape over the internal flash or use the diffuser that comes with the filter pack, or the camera flash will give you too much backscatter. I've done both, either works.

I have the DS-50. Since the camera has no manual exposure mode, I recommend you get a strobe with a manual adjustment. You can get this capability either with the DS-125 or by adding the new controller to the DS-50.

I recommend forced flash, center metering, no camera sharpening (do this later if you like), use red filter for any shot beyond 4 feet.

You can see some pictures from Bahamas, Turkey and Coz at

    Hope this helps!

    Cheers :D

  14. Just back from my first dives with Sony P9 and S&S YS-25DX strobe. I'm pleased with the strobe, less pleased with my ability to take decent photos.

    The strobe worked well:

    1. The cycle time is a couple of seconds (even after about 200 flashes), this is much shorter than the flash cycle time on the P9.

    2. The fibre-optic connection never failed to sense the camera flash, and the velcro didn't fall off. The camera preflash is correctly ignored by the strobe.

    3. The strobe is not hugely powerful, but sufficient for maybe 2m.

    My main problems were:

    1. Forgetting to set the camera to forced flash.

    2. Staying still enough to be in good focus after the shutter lag.

    3. Trying to take a picture before the camera flash was charged.

I also need more experience in setting the strobe power, there are 7 levels plus diffuser on/off. Anyway I will post photos with/without strobe (if I can work out how to post photos).
