Porbeagle article in The Times

  1. Hi all

For any UK Times readers out there if you go to page 20 you'll see an article on Porbegales along with a photo taken from some HDV footage that I got a couple of weeks ago (the first comprehensive footage of Porbeagles ever).

Here's the online link to the article, but sadly there is no photo online and I can't post any at the moment due to agreements already in place.

    Porbeagle article.

    Cheers, Simon

  4. Wow ... nice stuff.

I had never heard of a Porbeagle shark before ..

It's a great little article .. very educating ... I am still a little jaw dropped by the story though to discuss it .. 60 of the same shark on one long line .. wow .. I like the way the blame tries to get pushed off on the French though !

  5. Porbeagles are incredible sharks. Very similar to a Mako when you see them free swimming, although an untrained eye could very easily mistake them for a White Shark.

After being in the middle of the latest 'Great White' flap in Cornwall for the last 2 or 3 weeks it was nice to actually get an article in the press that had some facts in it and some genuine photos for once!

    Cheers, Simon

  6. I went to the pub this evening and found a copy. Great stuff.

Nice to see the Times publishing a "fisherman catches sharks shock" story.

  10. good job simon, those are indeed cool looking sharks

  11. I just found out today that last week the same long liner was working in more or less the exact area that we were filming and tagging the Porgies a few weeks ago :)

....so we're now waiting to hear if any of the tags have started to broadcast yet :guiness:

I can't say on a public forum how I feel about this, but the fact that we were there and reported a recovering population could very well have started them fishing for them again. I'm sitting here literally with tears in my eyes.

  13. And yet a bunch of kids can get in trouble for making a comedy skit titled "chav hunting" ... what is this world coming to !

  14. Slightly off topic, how did these sharks get that name...? Porbeagle?

  15. Porbeagle comes from the Cornish word "porbugel" or "porgh-bugel," perhaps from Old French words for "hog" and "nose." Nobody seems to know for sure, but it's an old word, suggesting an old relationship between this shark and people. It's one of the few English names for a shark species that isn't just some other name or some verb or object planted as a prefix onto "shark."

Somebody just caught a big one here in Massachusetts. I noticed on the local late-night newscast that they didn't bother to give the name of the shark, probably because porbeagle didn't sound menacing enough.
