Canon sd900 sd950 or G7

  1. Hi.

Can someone give an opinion on these cameras ? I was thinking on getting a G7 which I've read a lot of reviews here, but the two sd models are smaller and in the case of the sd 900 (or ixus 900 Ti) have the same 10 MP and ccd size 1/1.8" but the G7 as manual focusing . Does the 900Ti as the same performance as the G7? what are the main differences ? I was also planing on getting a canon housing WP-DC7,WP-DC15 or WP-DC11 in the case of G7.

    Thanks :)

  2. The DC11 housing can be tricky. If you want to shoot wide angle, there is supposed to be a French adapter for w/a lenses, but I haven't seen it. If you really want to do the G7 justice, house it in an Ikelite so you can hard wire a strobe.

The SD series don't offer much manual control. You'll get automatic exposure with some exposure compensation.

Have you looked at the A570is? This model takes AA batteries and the housing supports wide angle/macro lenses. The resolution is 7MP, but you won't see much real world difference in photos.

  3. They're completely different cameras. The SD/Ixus series of cameras are ultracompacts, designed to look pretty and be small enough to fit in your handbag so you can take happy snaps when you're out with your girlfriends (:)), whereas the G7 is designed more for taking actual photographs.

I wouldn't touch an SD/Ixus. If you want something smaller and/or cheaper than a G7, check out the Powershot A-series, in particular the A630.

  4. Ok let's forget the sd/ixus series .The A-series A640 vs A710 Is. The 710 as 7.1 MP less than the 10 MP of the 640 what is your opinion ??

  5. The A640 and A710 are both great cameras. Unfortunately, the Canon housings have rectangular ports. That's going to make it very tricky if you want to shoot wide angle or add a macro lens. For the most part, you would be limited to shooting head & shoulders portraits and the occasional closeup.

All those reefscapes you see in the magazines are done with a wide angle lens. Ikelite housings can accommodate that. The canon housings for these models are questionable. That's why I recommended the A570is. The Canon housing for it can take the wide angle lenses.

Anything above 6MP is fine. The real photo differences between 7MP and 10MP are small.
