Hidden rust in Ikelite trays

  1. Recently I remove the handles of my tray just to discover a lot of salt and rust hidden on the main screw of the handle... I guess even when we soak the housing overnight, we should remove handles from time to time...

  2. Thanks for that, I will check mine and add a little silicone.

  3. Thank you. I will check it..

  4. Thanks, I don't have it after more then 3 year in my housing but instead I have some rust on the back of the housing under the metal clasps, nothing that some sand paper won't removed in a moment but still I don’t expect to see it on an u/w equipment.

  5. I, happily, removed those Ike handles a few days after I received my housing. I really did not like their feel. I replaced them with Ultralite handles which I like so much better.

  6. I have also go some rust on the clasp on the sides and back. OK I have been doing alot of diving recently, but the unit is only 4 months old with around 40 dives.

It crossed my mind to remove the screw and give it a clean. But I am paranoid that I will thread the screw the wrong way or it is sealed in with some kind of glue or resin.

Anyone done this before or have any suggestions.

  7. I already did this too. There is no glue or resin there just a screw. There no adittional risk for leaks also by doing this, just unscrew it, clean it and screw it again, do not overtight.

Tight regular until it stop, maybe an 1/8 more, but that´s it.

For cleaning use vinegar or mild soap and a green sponge, then apply some silicone grease (lightly) and you are set.

when you dry your housing, use a facial tissue or toilet paper and press it up against the bas of the mounting brackets and anything else mounted externally and it will wick the water from behind it. Then no more rust!
