GoogleEarth Dive Sites?

2 posts
  1. I am just starting to wake up to the potential of GoogleEarth (I know I'm slow :) ) and realized immediately the potential for dive planning using the detailed maps, a GPS and photos and video linked through the GoogleEarth community. This seems like an ideal venue for underwater photographers to share their work. plan trips and even locate dive sites.

Most of the time I dive with commercial operators who have the boats and know the dive sites. But I also like to shore dive and boat dive with my own boat when available. Recently I went to Baja around Los Barrillos where my parents stay in their RV for half of the year. I wanted to dive with my dad's fishing boat but I didn't know where the sites were. I went with a dive operator instead--a very respectible American/British run outfit. I ended up having to charter the boat due to lack of other divers. They couldn't find one of the (very popular) dive sites I requested. Having the GPS data would be helpful weather you go commercial or strike out on your own.

I can't be the only one who thinks this is a good idea. Is anyone tabulating dive sites in GoogleEarth?

    Thanks.

  2. Ok....

I found this dive site collection on the Google Earth Community. It looks like a pretty good start. Anyone care to add to it?

Just change the extension from .txt to .kmz to lad in Google Earth. It seems the site can't accept .kmz file uploads :)
