Digital use for an Ikelite 100

  1. Hey all,

After 24 years, it looks like I may retire my Nikonos IV and go DSLR. I am currently using an Ikelite 100 strobe. As of yet, I have no clue what camera/housing/strobe set-up I will get. Is there any use for my strobe in the digital world? Cn it be used as a slave or can any modifications be made to better adapt it to the digital world? In advance, thanks for your help.

  2. I just switched to digital last year and have used 2 100a's for 20 years. I only used them on one trip. They work well as long as you understand that they only have two settings, half and full and won't do ttl. The ttl thing is a can of worms that has been opened soooo many times here I'll stay away from it. I seem to use ttl when I'm in a situation where I'm waiting for some chance encounter with something rare that swims fast like a shark or mermaid. Otherwise, after spending the $ for ttl I've found I love the control I get from manual. A great shot with the 100's was no worse than a great shot with my new ds125's. I bought 2 Ike ds125's because the 100 a's were so damn big and buoyant that when they were out at the end of the arms (2x8" on each side) they kind of had a wierd oscillation thing going and a mind of their own when you needed to hold the camera real still, and in any kind of surge or current it was almost impossible. I have a d200 in a subal. That being said, I now believe that as I have gotten better with my gear I could get almost the same results with the 100's and shorter arms! Soooo, I'd advise you to try them and see.

    Hi Sandy,

I just started with UW Digital after many years of a nikonos system. I am using my 2 SB 105s with my digital set up and they work fine. No TTL but I have not missed having it yet. And the price is right :( I have them already

  4. I used 2x 100A with D70 for a year. I missed 1/4 and 1/8 power settings on some occasions but that could be addressed by diffusers.

Overall they woked fine when they worked. I mean I had some reliability issues with them since I bought them (second hand).

I like DS-125 much more for faster recycle and more power settings, but I'd probably still use 100A if I could trust it to work.

  5. Hey Andy, Joe, and Andrzej,

Thanks for the feedback. I have a lot to learn in the digital world but I was steered to the right forum.

One other thing that has come to mind. If you can afford a housing that has a sportsfinder and you have old eyes like me. GO FOR IT.

    Hi Sandy

I have an ikelite ai the model before the 100. I shoot manual 125 speed- asa 200- and the strobe set to 1/2 power. I put a pentax k100 slr inside a nikon n90 ikelite housing. Camera picks aperature usually f11 or 16. Works great as digital picks up so much ambiant light vs film.
