Comms for u/w cameraman

  1. I'm talking about another potential job where the director wants to direct the underwater cameraman from the surface. e.g. reality game show scenario.

Anyone up with the current market in comms? I guess the gear usually comes with a full face mask so the diver can talk also but actually just earpieces would be enough so the diver can hear instructions. Doesn't necessarily need to talk back.

It will be a shallow job so presumably wireless will be possible?

We were loaned a wireless comms set in 1994 for the Lusitania expedition but the diver's voice was barely intelligible. Presumably the technology's improved a bit.

  2. Contact:

    John Hott

    Ocean Technology Systems

    The gear they have works.

  3. Cheers Peter, i've fired off an email to them.

  4. Besides OTS, there is also a Canadian company that does underwater coms. They were used on a few TV shows in the US.

I use Oceanreef equipment for this types of jobs. Just take a look to my web site http://www.erikhenchoz.com/news.asp?ID=20 and www.oceanreefgroup.com.

Director can use a special equipment from the boat.

  6. How about a big slate with a weight attached on a piece of line...Oh, and two pencils, both waterproof would be good...

Or an underwater messenger pigeon :(

  7. I normally find a couple of Baked Bean tins joined by some old washing line, has to be 2 gauge nylon - 4 diameter - double coated poly from the Trgekistan mills of Bolokovski, tends to be the mutts for that kinda job.

    Cheers,

Mark, nothing better to do on a Sunday other than hijack perfectly good threads and mess with them, Thorpe.

  8. Hey...I do the Jokes around here..

Stick to the filming Thorpe :(

P.s did you receive my latest V/o ????

  9. Er, thanks... I think. The slate system is actually a possibility.

If we get some comms gear we might even try some underwater presenting this coming season, just to keep us interested. Anyone done this? (on either side of the camera)

  10. Not underwater, but I did a bit for a showreel not long ago...Apparently I was very natural... :( Is that good ???

You could just use a full face mask U/W and act the lines (no comms) while looking into the camera, then over dub it at the surface...In other words cheat a little, half the time audio is hardly audible anyway..This gives the look of u/w presenting with better audio quality...And saves money...

  11. Ha, all that money on quality microphones and then we'll filter the audio to sound like Neil Armstrong doing a spacewalk.

Maybe we'll just use a normal reg and make out it's a special one with a mic in it. The wonders of modern technology etc.. Do you think they'll guess?

  12. Howard Hall told me quite a while ago that his team did plenty of experimentation with different comm systems and he would probably be a great source of info. Just go on his website. If he isn't free, Michelle should be up on everything you would need to know.

    Good luck Nick
