Zoom gear for 10-17 came off during my dive

  1. I have a nikon d80, sea-n-sea housing, tokina 10-17mm lens..

A couple people on this board recommeded the zoom gear for the canon 18-35mm, they said it would work...

well, it fit on, barely... the zoom gear was almost up against the camera body, but it seemed to work... worked well on my dives, except that during two dives the zoom gear came off the lens and fell into the dome port.

actually a couple photos I took that way looked pretty cool! I was able to get it to slip back on the lens by holding my pointing my camera up, although if I pointed it down it sometimes slipped back out.

I think it might have been my fault that it came off, I might have turned it too much in one direction, because I wasn't used to which was zoomed-in and which way zoomed-out.

it felt tight enough, but maybe I should try the thicker o-ring it came with? or maybe it was just because I forced it in one direction.

anyways, I'm curious to see if this ever happened to anyone else, and what they did about it.

is anyone else here using the sea-n-sea canon 18-35mm zoom gear with a sea-n-sea housing, nikon body, and tokino 10-17mm lens?

  2. I think a lot of people are using a zoom gear that was either made or designed for another lens, just make sure it's nice and tight before you close the housing and move the zoom back and forth several times on the table to check it stays put before you take it down, you'll be okay then.

  3. Heres a little trick i use if you have a zoom ring that doesn't quite fit - get a wide rubber band (I actually went to the prodcue dept of my supermarket and bought some broccoli - it comes with that nice wide rubber band along the stalks) and slip the zoom ring over the rubberband. If that makes it too wide for the zoom ring you could always cut a secion of the band and attach to the inside of the zoom ring.

    cheers!

  4. I have the same lens, but I use the focusing ring from the 60mm macro lens.

The gear fits pretty well but I also had the gear come off during one dive.

Since that dive I use a rubber band (or actually an elastic rope, 3mm thick) that I place in front of the zoomgear on the lens itself, it keeps the lens fixated on right place on the lens and prevents the gear from sliding off...

  5. well, I tried putting a fat rubber band around the lens... the zoom gear went on tighter, a little too tight... it didn't go on as far as before, and barely caught the gear of the housing.. it worked during a test, but stopped working halfway through a dive, so I couldn't zoom in/out anymore...

after I got out of the water, I took off the rubber band and put the thin rubber strip onto the lens, it came with the zoom gear. well, that worked perfect! the zoom gear fit snugly, and went back far enough. now its been working great for several dives.

Sea & Sea 56350 for NIKON AF ED 18-35 F3.5/4.5 D. Worked well with Tokina 10-17 for a couple of hundred dives so far!

that is the zoom gear that I have. it worked with the nikon d80, but you have to use the thin rubber strip that comes with it to prevent it from falling off. this may not be true on other camera, where you can push the zoom gear on further.

its good to hear other zoom gears work also!

  9. We were initially selling the 16-35 gear for this lens, but the shimming was too messy, so we went a different direction.

We now machine 1.5mm out of the 18-35 gear, and it works perfectly WITHOUT any shimming. The stock 18-35 gear could be used if you remove the rubber ring, and build up the lens a bit, but we've found most customers would rather spend an extra $50 and have it fit perfectly without any messing around.
