Using Ikelite and Inon Together?

4 posts
  1. Just a curious question if anyone is combining a Ikelite strobe and Inon strobe off the same housing?

I'm a fan of both the DS125 and Inon Z240 strobes and I understand the difference in color temperatures and operations, batteries, etc between both. But I have never combined them fo use, one on one side, and the other opposite. I wouldn't suspect any camera problems, can anyone think of or have experience of why not to combine these two great options together?

  2. What advantages are you expecting to get from combining these two strobes? I can't think of any.

Using the two strobes together means traveling with different batteries and chargers and different sync cords plus different TTL solutions if you use that. Angle of coverage, brightness and white balance will not match either though you could filter the Inon to match color. In the end, the combination buys you nothing, though in a pinch you could mix the two if you had a failure of a primary strobe. For wide angle the color mismatch might not be too noticable but for macro it probably would be. If I were traveling with this I'd make sure to have a color matching filter.

  3. I did not have a set plan to use both but was curious how much the color differences would affect the outcome or if they provide a nice presentation if placed correctly to utlize each of their benefits? There was a debate about color temperatures and what was most desireable. Given this, I had just wondered that if during macro photography an area above or below the subject would benefit from different color temps than the opposing side of things? My guess by your reaction is there would be to much of a mismatch versus benefit. I'm no expert, please excuse my naivete.

Understandably, I would not expect anyone to enjoy the added factor needing different sync cords, batteries, etc, coupled with the normal spares, etc. that we all have to deal with even with just simliar strobes.

  4. Noticable differences in color balance are generally to be avoided. With video, the effect is frequently noticable and you try to shoot either entirely with or without lights in order to avoid the weird color casts in shadows. Same thing would apply here but to a far lesser extent.

If you could imagine a slightly warmer light highlighting a face and consider that a desirable effect then the technique might be interesting, but keep in mind that your subjects likely won't contain skin tones and you would probably want even lighting with the colder strobes and highlighting with the warmer one. That would lead me to think you may want three strobes rather than two. Such an effect could just as easily be done with three Z-240s using two in a conventional configuration and the third hand-held with a color filter attached. A highlight strobe doesn't need the extra beam width that the DS-125 offers over the Z-240. In fact, you'd probably want the opposite.

I carry a third Inon strobe attached to my BC on all macro dives. I use it for backlighting and shadow filling when I want it. Attaching a warming filter to Inon strobes is quite easy and they can be quickly changed underwater. That approach offers the advantage that you can control the amount of color difference rather than settle for whatever the DS-125 offers. The third strobe can also be swapped with one of the others during the dive should one of the primary strobes fail.
