I have heard from a friend of mine who is a Sea and Sea distributor and dive shop owner that they have stopped making the 5D housing. Is this true, do they know something about a new canon camera or are all the 5Ds that need housings already in one.

xmmmmm ! <_< i didn't hear anything about that. if it's true i have a collector's item in my hand ! i sell it for 50.000 euros ! any interested ?
Yes, the DX-5D production has ceased and remaining stock at distributors and retailers is all that remain. Sea&Sea will be producing a 40D housing and possibly other Canon housings very soon. Stay tuned.
Interesting that Sea&Sea ceased production of the DX-5D... I smell a 5D successor around the corner... Is the other Canon housing for one of the big boys?

interested in housing a $8K 1Ds Mark IIII? That would be nice if Canon comes out soon with a 5D replacement though...

Why? Not selling?
inquiring minds want to know.

Not me, but I know some people that are. And I think the only Canons that are not being housed by Sea&Sea are the big ones, they have a pretty complete line of housings for the small DSLRs, so what else can it be?

I wonder if its a case of S&S knowing of an upcoming 5D replacement release and they are clearing inventory... Don't know how close of a relationship S&S has with Canon and whether they get any early notification or pre release design specs...
A 5D successor is the only logical idea. It would b ehard to dismiss given the recent updates within the Canon DSLR lines, the 5D is really all that is left to change.
Sea & Sea have a demonstrated habit of ending a products ( housing ) availabilty well before the camera has been discontinued.
The early end of production of D7O housings , or the early finish of the YS90DX strobes are recent examples of this behaviour.
Trying to interpret any underlying reason or apply western logic will only be lost in the interpretation.
If anything Sea & Sea would have ties to Sigma & Ricoh, having used and still using many of their products under their own banner.
I am looking at 5D housings and am considering a sea and sea. My dealer has one.
Do other 5D users have guidance on S&S vs other options. Ike is too big. I travel and need something more compact. Any recommendations?
Thanks
Various reasons to end production of a product, but mainly it applies to a minimum production run, sales and the market-life of the actual camera. Japan has very close relationships with the majors and hence our time to market on DSLR housings are some of the fastest in the industry. It's a lose-lose, if we do another run and the camera goes away, one could imagine the $ involved in sitting on dead-stock, flip side is not being able to meet some demand.
