Beginner questions with Subal housings

  1. Hi all,

I am the proud (!) very new owner of a Nikon D2x and a Subal ND2 housing.

Having read Subal's instructions, they are at pains to point out that you should only use Nikon flashes with TTL or it may blow the camera electronics.

By this, do they mean Nikon compatible? I have two YS 110's and would like at least the option of using them as TTL strobes.

Also, the o ring grease supplied is standard silicon-I'm sure I read that Subal O rings need Sea and Sea type grease, or is this incorrect?

    Many thanks

    Adam

  2. Flashes with a high trigger voltage had a way of causing older cameras to freeze up. I have not heard of this being a problem in a long long time.

    Cheers

  3. What they mean is that you can use any strobe with the housing in manual mode by making sure the hot shoe wiring is placed in the outer connectors, the inner two are only for the Nikon TTL strobe.

The only way you can use Sea&Sea strobes in TTL with a Nikon digital camera is with the Sea&Sea TTL converter, that is true for any housing and any digital SLR, not just Nikon and Subal. However, I'm not sure if the S&S TTL converter works with the YS110 or only the new YS120. For loads of information on S&S TTL converter check this topic:

Now, when using S&S strobes in manual with the Subal/D2x combination, several users have reported erratic behavior of the D2x (camera not recording images properly, etc.). The solution for this problem can be found here:

The o-ring grease is standard, no need for the Sea&Sea type.

  5. Hi all,

Thanks very much for the great info and your patience in explaining it all again! :)

Pin is now out of the housing-I'll dive it tomorrow.

I did so yesterday, and it did seem to not record all my images (although no strobes were connected). Does

the extra pin make it fail to record properly even without strobes?

Or do I have another problem?

I'll dive it and see if it cures it, but if anyone else has had any similar experiences.....?

Many thanks to you all again

    Adam

  6. As others mentioned use the outer pin connectors and shoot manual. If you are using the wrong pin set up it may mess up the the camera's electronics even if you don't have a strobe connected. I had problems with a bad synch cord even though the strobe was not turned on.
