Hi guys,I'm planning to go to SA in beginning of July next year and I'd be really interested in hearing from people with experience in shark diving around there. I have a total of 18 days for the trip. A couple of questions:
1. Which operator would you recommend for a comprehensive "shark dive" package(anyone tried diving with Dive The Big 5)
2. Which specific dive sites and areas should I visit?
3. How's the season at that time - what should I expect to see and go specifically after?
please use the search function and you'll find a lot of recent info on the subject. If you have further questions, just ask.
I live in Cape Town,South Africa 15 minutes away from all the shark diving and 2 hours away from Gaansbaai(the holy grail of Great White Shark diving).I have dived with White Sharks many times and i am still amazed at how huge and powerfull they are.If you like big shark action this is the place to be no doubt.Basically to dive the big five you have to start in Cape Town and work you way way up to Kwazulu Natal and stopping along the way to dive different species. In Cape Town and Gaansbaai we have the Great White shark, best company to use is White Shark Projects.I use them for filming underwater scenes for TV shoot and they are great and very proffesional. You also can dive the Blue Shark and Mako shark in the Atlantic off the Cape Town. Its a long 40 mile ride out but there is a company here that take divers out on the blue water express dive. The company is called unreal dive. However you coming in winter when the seas are pretty rough by the way(they dont called it the Cape of Storms for nothing) so you need to check if those sharks are there. Then you start moving up the coast Aliwal shoal and Protea Banks to dive with Bull sharks and Tiger sharks. This place is world renowned for the best shark dive action without a doubt. Finally move up the coast you can dive with whale sharks. In this area on any one dive you could end up diving with 3 or 4 different species. Its amazing.
Remember water temperature along that coastline is between 14 to 18 degress and it can get really cold so bring 8mm wetsuit with hoodie and gloves.South Africa is adventure diving, not like the Red Sea or Thailand?
