Sea & Sea YS250 Pro

  1. Just bought two of the new 250 pro strobes from Japan to replace my 120's, and I can say they are the best flash that Sea and Sea has made in years.

The 12 M power setting and recycle time is superb.

I still shoot in Manual with my D2x, and would recomend these strobes. Lots of power..

They are a bit heavier in the water compared to the 120's..

  2. Hi Dan

i'm also thinking to buy this strobe to replace my YS-90 Auto (2 units).

However i rarely shoot wide-angle. i shoot macro most of the time.

i'm thinking to replace my Ys-90 with Inon 240z or YS-250 Pro

the only thing that i dont like from Ys-90 auto is the recycle time (3 sec). From what i read on the spec of Ys-250 auto, it's a recycle time of 1.5 sec, which is similar to Inon 240z.

What is you suggestion? i love the power of Ys-250 pro, but i hate the size of the stobe >.<

Should i buy Ys-250 or Inon 240 (Gn Power 24, recycle time 1.5 sec)

would ys-250 "too big or too much" for Macro photography?

    Thx in advance

    Andree ^^

  3. Today i finally decided to buy 2 units of YS 250 pro :) to replace my YS 90 auto.

I never had a strobe as big, heavy and powerfull as this one. I don't know how to handle them under the water >.<

i hope i can try them out this sunday at tegal island

i can't wait to try them out

    Hi sorry from the delay.

The strobe are heavier underwater than the 120's, but the power is superb. As much and as little as you require.

I tested them to 97m (330ft apprx) and perfect.

For macro, they are a bit overkill interms of size, so int Inon would be a better choice.. But as I shoot mostly wide angle they work for me.

  5. Hi everybody, Dan & V_kids

I'm writing from Italy just because I've found in Internet someone other having (maybe) my own problem...

Before all, excuse me for my english that could be better, but your discussion is the only "technical report" I've found over the Sea&Sea YS250Pro in the Net.... so I've decided to join the forum and ask someting in deep in the matter...

I have the same problem... I've 2 S&S Y/S120Duo, but I find that their shoots are insufficient for the wide angle photos specially with the FishEye (forgetting the additional problem of pointing becouse the lack of target lights) and I've planned to change in the near future.

In this direction your mail exchange convinced me to proceed with the buying, because once I'm sure that the GN is really 32 instead 22 (the 120) with the same coverage angle, this is a sufficient reason to buy...

More than this, I'm informed by the Internet site of my japanese supplier that in the future will be available an equipment from Sea&Sea to provde the TTL functionalities, but at the moment this eq. is not available yet (pls read the page www.uwdigitalcamera.com/goods_detail.php?goodsIdx=187, the red rows).

This could be the solution for the macro shoots, using a new flash more powerful than the old one.

Are you aware about this new facility? And/or did you plan to buy it? Or do you thing to continue to operate manually in all the situations ?

Thank you for your kind reply....

    Hi Giovanni!

First of all, i never intended to shoot in TTL mode with this flash.

i guess i'm a big fans of Manual Mode Lighting :) since 90% of my works is Macro.

i know that S&S will release new TTL converter for this Flash very soon... when that happen, i will pay attention to people who use it. After than i will make a decision to buy or not :P

One of the reason why i bought this lens for my macro works is the RECYCLE time!!

i heard that when you are using only 1/4 of the power of this flash, the recycle time is ZERO!

and the power from 1/4 of this flash is bright enough to fill aperture f22 ( i will prove it this sunday)

My old YS-90 auto, needs about 3 sec to recycle for full power.

    Best Regards

    Andree

  7. Thank you V_Kids for the quick reply...

Obviously, I'm adopting too the manual mode in taking photos. :(

I'm provided with a Nikon D100 that adopts the D-TTL standard; this one has been abandoned by Nikon, :) so it's quite impossible to me hoping to have some a different operative way in the future. :(

The only chance I have is an external equipment like the one we are speaking to, even if I don't think this eq. will never include the D-TTL std in their TTL facilities. :(

As chemical photographer I've used the TTL facilities for underwater macro shoots, and I've found this opportunity very useful.... If all this were available for digital photography also, I'd use it.

Anyway, I agree with you that this problem could be exceed, and this don't stop me (us) in taking photos underwater.... :P

The other aspect is: It seems to me you all are fully satisfied of technical results of this flash, raising from a middle power flashes like the Y/S120 or similar....

I don't know any other people having bougth this flash at today, and till this morning I feel myself fully unsupported in the evaluation...

Thanks to you all, I think really I'll buy asap a couple of new flashes... You can try to ask Sea&Sea for your royalties.... I subscribe it...

Ciao... Thank you and "have good bubbles"
